Coupled qubits: effects of transverse slow noise

Abstract

We discuss the performance of two qubits with a transverse coupling affected by transverse low-frequency noise. In the adiabatic approximation, the system dynamics develops separately in two subspaces, with differing behaviors depending on the qubits' coupling strength and the noise amplitude. In one subspace, an optimal value of coupling is found, which minimizes the noise effects and leads to a slower signal decay.

Effects of low-frequency noise cross-correlations in coupled superconducting qubits

Antonio D’Arrigo, Andrea Mastellone, Elisabetta Paladino +1 more

We study the effects of correlated low-frequency noise sources acting on a two-qubit gate in a fixed coupling scheme. A decoherence model for the spatial and cross-talk correlations is introduced. The efficiency inside the SWAP subspace is analyzed by combining analytic results based on the adiabatic approximation and numerical simulations. Results critically depend on amplitude of the low-frequency noise with respect to the qubits' coupling strength. Correlations between noise sources induce different qualitative behavior depending on the values of the above parameters. The possibility to reduce dephasing due to correlated low-frequency noise by a recalibration protocol is discussed.

PROTECTED COMPUTATIONAL SUBSPACES OF COUPLED SUPERCONDUCTING QUBITS

Andrea Mastellone, Antonio D’Arrigo, Elisabetta Paladino +1 more

We discuss the effect of low-frequency noise on interacting superconducting qubits in a fixed coupling scheme. By properly choosing operating conditions, within the adiabatic framework the systems develops two decoupled subspaces. The subspace where a SWAP operation takes place turns out to be resilient to low frequency fluctuations. The possibility to encode a single qubit in a protected two-physical-qubit system subspace is briefly discussed.

Qubit decoherence under two-axis coupling to low-frequency noises

Guy Ramon, Łukasz Cywiński

Many solid-state qubit systems are afflicted by low-frequency noise mechanisms that operate along two perpendicular axes of the Bloch sphere. Depending on the qubit control fields, either noise can be longitudinal or transverse to the quantization axis of the qubit, thus affecting its dynamics in distinct ways, generally contributing to decoherence that goes beyond pure dephasing. Here, we present a theory that provides a unified platform to study dynamics of a qubit subjected to two perpendicular low-frequency noises (assumed to be Gaussian and uncorrelated) under dynamical decoupling pulse sequences. The theory is demonstrated by the commonly encountered case of power law noise spectra, where approximate analytical results can be obtained.

Dephasing of qubits by transverse low-frequency noise

Yu. Makhlin, Alexander Shnirman

We analyze the dissipative dynamics of a two-level quantum system subject to low-frequency, e.g., 1/ f noise, motivated by recent experiments with superconducting quantum circuits. We show that the effect of transverse linear coupling of the system to low-frequency noise is equivalent to that of quadratic longitudinal coupling. We further find the decay law of quantum coherent oscillations under the influence of both low-and high-frequency fluctuations, in particular, for the case of comparable rates of relaxation and pure dephasing.

Non-Markovian dynamics of single- and two-qubit systems interacting with Gaussian and non-Gaussian fluctuating transverse environments

Matteo A. C. Rossi, Matteo G. A. Paris

We address the interaction of single- and two-qubit systems with an external transverse fluctuating field and analyze in detail the dynamical decoherence induced by Gaussian noise and random telegraph noise (RTN). Upon exploiting the exact RTN solution of the time-dependent von Neumann equation, we analyze in detail the behavior of quantum correlations and prove the non-Markovianity of the dynamical map in the full parameter range, i.e., for either fast or slow noise. The dynamics induced by Gaussian noise is studied numerically and compared to the RTN solution, showing the existence of (state dependent) regions of the parameter space where the two noises lead to very similar dynamics. We show that the effects of RTN noise and of Gaussian noise are different, i.e., the spectrum alone is not enough to summarize the noise effects, but the dynamics under the effect of one kind of noise may be simulated with high fidelity by the other one.

Effect of Cross-Spectral Correlations on Qubit Dynamics: Coherence Revival and Relaxation Modulation

Siddhartha Dutta, Sujay Mondal, Abhijit Bandyopadhyay

We investigate the reduced dynamics of a qubit subject to correlated longitudinal and transverse noise arising from its coupling to a shared bosonic bath. The environmental fluctuations are characterized by a positive-semidefinite matrix-valued spectral density, whose complex off-diagonal elements encode correlations between dephasing and relaxation channels in the frequency domain. Within the second-order time-convolutionless framework, we derive closed time-local equations for the Bloch-vector components of the reduced density matrix. The numerical implementation is validated against the exact pure-dephasing solution and the established behavior of the transverse-coupling spin-boson model. When both noise channels are present, the cross-spectral terms couple the otherwise distinct dephasing and relaxation sectors, producing dynamics that cannot be reproduced by adding independent noise contributions. In particular, the correlations generate non-monotonic population relaxation and a transient revival of coherence following its initial decay. The strength, bandwidth, delay, and phase of the cross spectrum provide control parameters for the magnitude and temporal structure of these effects. Our results demonstrate that correlated multi-axis noise can redistribute coherence loss and energy relaxation in time, thereby providing finite temporal windows of enhanced coherence or suppressed relaxation within the weak-coupling regime.
