Abstract

On the basis of the analytical solution of the Dirac equation the resonant multiphoton excitation of highly charged hydrogenlike ions in a strong high-frequency laser field is investigated. It is shown that the dynamics of the relativistic system is equivalent to two independent four-level systems (in the electrical-dipole approximation). The time evolution of the system is found using the nonperturbative resonant approach. We predict that due to multiphoton excitation by an appropriate laser pulse one can achieve various coherent superposition states in atomic or ionic systems with a high nuclear charge.

Multiphoton resonant excitation of atoms in strong laser fields and implementation of coherent superposition states

H. K. Avetissian, G. F. Mkrtchian

The multiphoton resonant excitation of three-level atoms in a strong laser field is investigated. The creation of various superposition states is shown. For implementation of these effects either the mean dipole moment in the excited states of an atom or, in three-level systems, a transition dipole moment between excited states (with energies close enough to each other) must be nonzero. The time evolution of the system is found using a nonperturbative resonant approach. Our calculations for the hydrogen atom suggest that by the appropriate optical pulses with moderate strong intensities one can achieve various superposition states by multiphoton resonant excitation.

Strong-field Relativistic Processes in Highly Charged Ions

Octavian Postavaru

In this thesis we investigate strong-field relativistic processes in highly charged ions. In the first part,we study resonance fluorescence of laser-driven highly charged ions in the relativistic regime by solving the time-dependent master equation in a multi-level model. Our ab initio approach based on the Dirac equation allows for investigating highly relativistic ions, and, consequently, provides a sensitive means to test correlated relativistic dynamics, bound-state quantum electrodynamic phenomena and nuclear effects by applying coherent light with x-ray frequencies. Atomic dipole or multipole moments may be determined to unprecedented accuracy by measuring the interference-narrowed fluorescence spectrum. Furthermore, we investigate the level structure of heavy hydrogenlike ions in laser beams. Interaction with the light field leads to dynamic shifts of the electronic energy levels, which is relevant for spectroscopic experiments. We apply a fully relativistic description of the electronic states by means of the Dirac equation. Our formalism goes beyond the dipole approximation and takes into account non-dipole effects of retardation and interaction with the magnetic field components of the laser beam. We predicted cross sections for the inter-shell trielectronic recombination (TR) and quadruelectronic recombination processes which have been experimentally confirmed in electron beam ion trap measurements, mainly for C-like ions, of Ar, Fe and Kr. For Kr30+, inter-shell TR contributions of nearly 6% to the total resonant photorecombination rate were found.

Efficient generation of moderately high harmonics by multiphoton resonant excitation of atoms

H. K. Avetissian, B. R. Avchyan, G. F. Mkrtchian

The coherent scattering spectrum of a three-level atom driven by an intense laser field with multiphoton resonant excitation is considered. The spectrum corresponding to harmonic generation is investigated both analytically and numerically for different initial atomic states. The analytical calculations are based on the generalized rotating wave approximation, which allows one to explain obtained spectra containing in general both even and odd harmonics. The results applied to the hydrogen atom show that one can achieve efficient generation of moderately high harmonics using multiphoton resonant excitation by appropriate laser pulses.

Enhanced high-order-harmonic generation and wave mixing via two-color multiphoton excitation of atoms and molecules

H. K. Avetissian, B. R. Avchyan, G. F. Mkrtchian

We consider harmonics generation and wave mixing by two-color multiphoton resonant excitation of three-level atoms and molecules in strong laser fields. The coherent part of the spectra corresponding to multicolor harmonics generation is investigated. The obtained analytical results on the basis of a generalized rotating wave approximation are in a good agreement with numerical calculations. The results applied to the hydrogen atoms and homonuclear diatomic molecular ions show that one can achieve efficient generation of moderately high multicolor harmonics via multiphoton resonant excitation by appropriate laser pulses.

Multiphoton resonance in a three-level system with nearly degenerate excited states

Michał Berent, R. Parzyński

An analytic study is presented of the efficient multiphoton excitation and strong harmonic generation in three-level systems specified by a pair of nearly degenerate, strongly dipole-coupled excited states. Such systems are physically formed by the three lowest states in, e.g., the hydrogen atom or evenly charged homonuclear diatomic molecular ions under reasonably chosen laser intensities. As a detailed analytic result, we found that the laser pulse of photon energy $2.05\text{eV}$, duration $0.23\text{ps}$, and intensity $5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{13}\frac{\mathrm{W}}{{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}}$ is able to produce complete inversion of the initial population in the hydrogen atom through the five-photon excitation. At the same photon energy, the pulse of duration $0.41\text{ps}$ and intensity $3.44\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{14}\frac{\mathrm{W}}{{\mathrm{cm}}^{2}}$ was found to produce the same effect in the molecular ion but through the nine-photon excitation. We show that the accompanying scattering of light has very rich spectrum differing substantially from that of the two-level system.

Two-color multiphoton resonant excitation of three-level atoms

H. K. Avetissian, B. R. Avchyan, G. F. Mkrtchian

The multiphoton resonant excitation of three-level atoms by the two laser fields of different frequencies is investigated. The time evolution of the system and analytical solutions expressing Rabi oscillations of the probability amplitudes at the two-color multiphoton resonant excitation are found using a nonperturbative resonant approach. The specific examples for experimental implementation of two-color multiphoton resonant excitation of hydrogen atoms are considered.
