Transmission spectra of cw beams affected by self-action under inversionless amplification conditions

Abstract

The transmission spectra of inversionless amplification are investigated. Propagation of a weak probe optical beam through a three-level medium pumped with a microwave strong beam is numerically modeled. Three various schemes of transitions under the conditions providing the amplification of the probe field without inversion are taken to calculate the atomic polarization, which enters the paraxial wave equations. Diffraction and self-action of beams due to nonlinear absorption and refraction are properly taken into account. These effects together with linear absorption and refraction form a complex distribution of gain across the beams. As a result the amplified beam acquires ring transverse patterns and slight asymmetry in the frequency characteristics.

Spatial and frequency manifestations of laser beam self-action effects in different schemes of inversionless amplification

Inna L. Plastun

Results of numerical simulation of coaxial propagation of an intense pump beam and a weak probe beam in a three-level medium with different types of energy diagrams in conditions of inversionless amplification are presented. The effect of the beam self-action and diffraction on the spatial and frequency characteristics of the probe wave were studied. These effects, in combination with linear absorption and refraction, give rise to complex spatial profiles of gain along the beam propagation path. The annular structure of the amplified beam and a small asymmetry of its frequency characteristics, resulting from the nontrivial gain profile over the beam cross section, were found and studied.

Numerical simulation of nonlinear resonance spectra in aperture-limited light beams having various profiles

Vladimir Leonardovich Derbov, Sergey K. Potapov, Inna L. Plastun +3 more

Only for optically thin layers and plane waves may the intensity of a light wave be unambiguously expressed in terms of the nonlinear susceptibility of the medium. In aperture limited light beams the saturation parameter and the Stark shifts are local variables, while the output intensity of the pump and probe beams is an integral characteristic of the transmission process. The output spectrum is affected by diffraction, nonlinear refraction, and saturated absorption. The nonlinear refraction is a cause of a spectral line asymmetry which is well- known in saturation spectroscopy. In addition to usual line broadening, the saturated absorption causes specific beam effects, related to the formation of a self-induced transparency channel. The diffraction of the beam due to this self-induced aperture may result in the enhancement of the on-axis intensity, which is not a result of the self-induced lens effects. All these factors are taken into account by the mathematical model suggested in the present work. The propagation of the near-resonance saturating pump and non-saturating probe beams of various initial profiles through a homogeneously broadened two-level gas is simulated numerically. The calculations carried out make it possible to analyze the contribution of the propagation phenomena, mentioned above, to the output spectra of the beams.

Wave-optics description of amplified spontaneous emission

J. C. Garrison, Burke Ritchie, Howard Nathel +2 more

Paraxial Maxwell-Bloch theory is used to describe amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in strongly inverted media. Counterpropagation of waves coupled through gain saturation and diffraction, and pumping by a laser beam which propagates transverse to the amplifier are included in the treatment. The reactive part of the medium polarization is calculated by population-rate equations in the limit of rapid dephasing of the atomic dipoles. The spontaneous emission noise source needed for the numerical simulation of Maxwell's equations is derived from microscopic theory by coarse-graining, thereby establishing the compatibility of the spherically symmetric microscopic source with paraxial propagation theory. The three coupled Maxwell equations for the counterpropagating ASE waves and the transversely propagating pump wave are solved numerically in time and two spatial dimensions. This simulation is used to calculate the longitudinal profile of the transverse fluorescence, which measures the saturation of the gain, the longitudinal profile of the transmitted pump wave, which measures the saturation of pump absorption, and the transverse coherence function of the radiation emitted from the ends of the amplifier.
