Abstract

The one-electron Shannon information entropy sum is reformulated in terms of a single entropic quantity dependent on a one-electron phase space quasiprobability density. This entropy is shown to form an upper bound for the entropy of the one-electron Wigner distribution. Two-electron entropies in position and momentum space, and their sum, are introduced, discussed, calculated, and compared to their one-electron counterparts for neutral atoms. The effect of electron correlation on the two-electron entropies is examined for the helium isoelectronic series. A lower bound for the two-electron entropy sum is developed for systems with an even number of electrons. Calculations illustrate that this bound may also be used for systems with an odd number of electrons. This two-electron entropy sum is then recast in terms of a two-electron phase space quasiprobability density. We show that the original Bialynicki-Birula and Mycielski information inequality for the N-electron wave function may also be formulated in terms of an N-electron phase space density. Upper bounds for the two-electron entropies in terms of the one-electron entropies are reported and verified with numerical calculations.

Studying the Effect of Correlation on Two Electron Systems and Measurement of Information Entropies

Sudin Singh, Aparna Saha

In this paper, a three parameter (α, λ, μ) ‘Hartree and Ingman (1933)’ type correlated wave function has been used to derive an analytical model to quantify the two electron systems. The model is used to construct the expressions for the single particle wave functions [ 𝜓(𝑟) , 𝜙(𝑝)] in coordinate space and momentum space respectively with the subscripts marked as correlated (c) and uncorrelated (uc) ones. Further, the correlated and uncorrelated wave functions are used to form the single particle charge densities [𝜌(𝑟) , 𝛾(𝑝)] in coordinate space and momentum space. These wave functions and the single particle charge densities are used to compute the numerical values of the Shannon (S) and Fisher (I) information entropies for both the correlated and uncorrelated systems in coordinate space and momentum spaces and furthermore to examine their correlation effects in coordinate and momentum spaces. The uncorrelated and correlated values of Shannon information entropies indicate the reciprocity between the coordinate and momentum spaces such that low values of the Shannon information entropy in coordinate space ( 𝑆𝜌), are associated with the high values of Shannon information entropy in momentum space (𝑆𝛾) . The uncorrelated and correlated values of Shannon information entropies (S) also validate the entropic uncertainty relations Bialynicki-Birula and Mycielski (BBM) inequality which reads as (𝑆𝜌+𝑆𝛾)≥3(1+𝑙𝑛𝜋), as well as another stronger version of the uncertainty relation that is (𝑆𝜌𝑐+𝑆𝛾𝑐)>(𝑆𝜌𝑢𝑐+𝑆𝛾𝑢𝑐). Further, both the products of uncorrelated and correlated values of Fisher information entropies 𝐼𝜌𝑢𝑐𝐼𝛾𝑢𝑐 and 𝐼𝜌𝑐𝐼𝛾𝑐 satisfy the inequality condition 𝐼𝜌𝑐𝐼𝛾𝑐>𝐼𝜌𝑢𝑐𝐼𝛾𝑢𝑐 in coordinate and momentum spaces. At the same time these products also satisfy the Fisher based uncertainty relation, 𝐼𝜌𝐼𝛾≥36. The consistency of the results satisfying the uncertainty relations can be checked from the data demonstrated in the Table 1 and Table 2.

Rigorous relationships among quantum-mechanical kinetic energy and atomic information entropies: Upper and lower bounds

Shridhar Ramachandra Gadre, Rajeev D. Bendale

An uncertainty-type lower bound [I. Bialynicki-Birula and J. Mycielski, Commun. Math. Phys. 44, 129 (1975)] to the information-entropy sum in complementary spaces has recently been reformulated by Gadre et al. [Phys. Rev. A 32, 2602 (1985)] in terms of the respective one-particle probability densities. This bound has been exploited to derive rigorous upper as well as lower bounds to the information entropies and their sum in terms of the corresponding second moments of their distributions. Thus the present work establishes a direct connection, as suggested by Sears, Parr, and Dinur [Israel J. Chem. 19, 165 (1980)], between the quantum-mechanical kinetic energy and information entropy in position space. It has also been demonstrated that given at least one arbitrary moment-type constraint in each space, it is possible to derive an upper bound to the information entropy sum in complementary spaces.

FISHER-SHANNON ENTROPIC UNCERTAINTY RELATIONS AND THEIR POWER-PRODUCTS AS A MEASURE OF ELECTRONIC CORRELATION

Sudin Singh, Aparna Saha

In this paper, we have presented an analytical model of two electron systems consisting of a many particle correlated wave function with some variational parameters α, λ and µ and used it to quantify the electron-electron correlation described by the wave function containing explicitly r12 (inter atomic distance between two electrons) dependent term. The single particle wave functions and the charge densities have been extracted from the said correlated wave function both for the uncorrelated and correlated systems in coordinate space and its momentum analogs have been obtained by taking the Fourier transform of the coordinate analogs. We have computed and presented the results of the numerical values of the theoretic information entropies of the Shannon entropy, Fisher information entropy, Shannon power and the FisherShannon product. The numerical values are consistently found to satisfy the Beckner, Bialynicki-Birula and Mycielski (BBM ) inequality relation; Stam-Cramer-Rao inequalities or Fisher based uncertainty relation and Fisher-Shannon product relation for the uncorrelated and correlated systems in both the coordinate and momentum spaces.

Tight rigorous bounds to atomic information entropies

Juan Carlos Angulo, J. S. Dehesa

The position-space entropy Sρ and the momentum-space entropy Sγ are two increasingly important quantities in the study of the structure and scattering phenomena of atomic and molecular systems. Here, an information-theoretic method which makes use of the Bialynicki–Birula and Mycielski’s inequality is described to find rigorous upper and lower bounds to these two entropies in a compact, simple and transparent form. The upper bounds to Sρ are given in terms of radial expectation values <rα≳ and/or the mean logarithmic radii <ln r≳ and <(ln r)2≳, whereas the lower bounds depend on the momentum expectation values <pα≳ and/or the mean logarithmic momenta <ln p≳ and <(ln p)2≳. Similar bounds to Sγ are also shown in a parallel way. A near Hartree–Fock numerical analysis for all atoms with Z≤54 shows that some of these bounds are so tight that they may be used as computational values for the corresponding quantities. The role of the mean logarithmic radius <ln r≳ and the mean logarithmic momentum <ln p≳ in the improvement of accuracy of the aforementioned bounds is certainly striking.

Information entropies calculation for the 1s 2 -state of helium-like ions

Ibraheem M. Nasser, Mostafa Zeama, Afaf Abdel Hady

This work presents analytical and numerical results for the position- and momentum-space information entropies, of the 1s 2 -state of helium-like ions, using different interaction potentials. The potentials that we used are the Yukawa potential (YP), and the exponential-cosine-screened Coulomb potential (ECSCP). The investigated studies allow us to relate the position-space information with the momentum-space information of Shannon and Fisher, as well as Shannon entropy power, and the Fisher-Shannon information product, through different famous relations. The calculation is done using the one-electron charge density of entangled two-parameter wave function. On one hand, the results that are presented for ten members in the helium isoelectronic sequence demonstrate with precision the effect of correlation on bare charge distributions. On the other hand, it leads to some very important results for both the correlated and uncorrelated values of the informatic entropies. Analytical formula for the momentum-space information entropies are given. The effect of the nuclear charge and the screening parameter on the information expressions has been studied for both potentials. Detailed computational and numerical values and characteristics of these information quantities, as a function of the screening parameter, are reported here for the first time. New inequality has been proposed with Fisher’s total value to measure the correlation of two electrons.

Characteristic features of Shannon information entropy of confined atoms

K. D. Sen

The Shannon information entropy of 1-normalized electron density in position and momentum space Sr and Sp, and the sum ST, respectively, are reported for the ground-state H, He+, Li2+, H-, He, Li+, Li, and B atoms confined inside an impenetrable spherical boundary defined by radius R. We find new characteristic features in ST denoted by well-defined minimum and maximum as a function of confinement. The results are analyzed in the background of the irreducible lower bound stipulated by the entropy uncertainty principle [I. Bialynicki-Birula and J. Mycielski, Commun. Math. Phys. 44, 129 (1975)]. The spherical confinement model leads to the ST values which satisfy the lower bound up to the limits of extreme confinements with the interesting new result displaying regions over which a set of upper and lower bounds to the information entropy sum can be locally prescribed. Similar calculations on the H atom in 2s excited states are presented and their novel characteristics are discussed.
