Abstract

We present a quantum theory of nondegenerate phase-sensitive parametric amplification in a χ(3) nonlinear medium. The nonzero response time of the Kerr (χ(3)) nonlinearity determines the quantum-limited noise figure of χ(3) parametric amplification, as well as the limit on quadrature squeezing. This nonzero response time of the nonlinearity requires coupling of the parametric process to a molecular vibration phonon bath, causing the addition of excess noise through spontaneous Raman scattering. We present analytical expressions for the quantum-limited noise figure of frequency nondegenerate and frequency degenerate χ(3) parametric amplifiers operated as phase-sensitive amplifiers. We also present results for frequency nondegenerate quadrature squeezing. We show that our nondegenerate squeezing theory agrees with the degenerate squeezing theory of Boivin and Shapiro as degeneracy is approached. We have also included the effect of linear loss on the phase-sensitive process.

Raman-noise-induced noise-figure limit for χ^(3) parametric amplifiers

Paul L. Voss, Prem Kumar

The nonzero response time of the Kerr [chi(3)] nonlinearity determines the quantum-limited noise figure of chi(3) parametric amplifiers. This nonzero response time of the nonlinearity requires coupling of the parametric amplification process to a molecular-vibration phonon bath, causing the addition of excess noise through Raman gain or loss at temperatures above 0 K. The effect of this excess noise on the noise figure can be surprisingly significant. We derive analytical expressions for this quantum-limited noise figure for phase-insensitive operation of a chi(3) amplifier and show good agreement with published noise-figure measurements.

Raman-effect induced noise limits on (3)parametric amplifiers and wavelength converters

The non-zero response time of the Kerr (χ (3) ) nonlinearity determines the quantum-limited noise figure of χ (3) parametric amplifiers and wavelength converters. This non-zero response time of the nonlinearity requires coupling of the parametric amplification process to a molecular-vibration phonon bath, causing the addition of excess noise through Raman gain or loss. The effect of this excess noise on the noise figure of the amplifier can be significant. We derive analytical expressions for this quantum-limited noise figure in the case of non-degenerate phase-insensitive operation of a χ (3) parametric amplifier and show excellent agreement with experiment without any fitting parameter. We also derive analytical expressions for the quantum limited noise figure for χ (3) -based wavelength converters.

A Theoretical Study of the Generation of Squeezed-State Light via Degenerate Parametric Amplification

David D. Crouch

This thesis is primarily a theoretical study of degenerate parametric amplification as a means of generating squeezed-state light. i) A wideband traveling-wave formalism is developed for analyzing quantum mechanically a degenerate parametric amplifier. The formalism is based on spatial differential equations — spatial Langevin equations — that propagate temporal Fourier components of the field through the nonlinear medium. In addition to the parametric nonlinearity, the Langevin equations include absorption and associated fluctuations, dispersion, and pump quantum fluctuations. The dominant effects of dispersion and pump quantum fluctuations on the squeezing produced by a degenerate parametric amplifier are analyzed. ii) The wideband formalism of i) is used to carry out a more detailed analysis of the effects of phase mismatching. With the assumption of a lossless medium and a classical pump, we find that parametric amplification is capable of generating squeezed-state light over a wide band if materials with large χ(2) nonlinearities can be found, and that the squeezing bandwidth can be enhanced by phase mismatching away from degeneracy. iii) We consider again the effect of pump quantum fluctuations on the squeezing produced by parametric amplification. We perform discrete-mode calculations for a parametric amplifier with a quantum pump, and discuss some of the limitations of calculations of this sort in quantum optics. We derive stochastic differential equations (SDEs) for one- and two-mode parametric amplifiers, and from them obtain an iterative solution showing that pump quantum fluctuations impose a limitation on the degree of squeezing obtainable from a parametric amplifier. iv) A possible application of squeezing is considered; in particular, we study the effects of squeezing the intracavity noise in a laser oscillator. We solve the classical noise problem of a realistic laser model by making a bold — and possibly unrealizable — assumption, that the in-phase and quadrature Langevin sources which are responsible for the "noisiness" of the laser can be squeezed. We show that the effect of squeezing the in-phase quadrature is to reduce the phase noise, including the linewidth, of the laser but, due to amplitude-phase coupling, not to eliminate them altogether.

Raman and loss induced quantum noise in depleted fiber optical parametric amplifiers

S. M. M. Friis, Karsten K. Rottwitt, Colin J. McKinstrie

We present a semi-classical approach for predicting the quantum noise properties of fiber optical parametric amplifiers. The unavoidable contributors of noise, vacuum fluctuations, loss-induced noise, and spontaneous Raman scattering, are included in the analysis of both phase-insensitive and phase-sensitive amplifiers. We show that the model agrees with earlier fully quantum approaches in the linear gain regime, whereas in the saturated gain regime, in which the classical equations are valid, we predict that the amplifier increases the signal-to-noise ratio by generating an amplitude-squeezed state of light. Also, in the same process, we analyze the quantum noise properties of the pump, which is difficult using standard quantum approaches, and we discover that the pump displays complicated dynamics in both the linear and the nonlinear gain regimes.

Quantum noise reduction in nondegenerate parametric amplification

Z. Y. Ou, Silvania F. Pereira, H. Jeffrey Kimble

Quantum fluctuations in an optical amplifier are of fundamental as well as technological significance and lead to basic limitations on noise performance. It is well-known that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of an injected signal is degraded in the amplification process due to added noise from thermal or (at best) vacuum fluctuations of the internal modes of the amplifier.[1] However, if the internal modes are coupled to a squeezed vacuum, the added noise in amplification can be reduced.[2] With this motivation, we have constructed a nondegenerate parametric amplifier whose idler mode is itself coupled to a squeezed vacuum, which is generated by a second parametric amplifier. Phase-sensitive noise amplification of a vacuum input to the signal mode is observed with the minimum amplified noise level 0.5dB below the usual phase-insensitive amplified noise level for the amplified signal of the same amplifier but with the idler mode coupled to a vacuum state. Prospects for improvement by increasing the squeezing that is coupled into the idler mode of the amplifier beyond the current level of 2dB as well as surprising results from our theoretical analysis which includes losses will be discussed.
