Spherical angle operators for quantum-mechanical angular momentum

Gerard Nienhuis, S. J. van Enk

We discuss the operators for the spherical angles of a quantum-mechanical angular momentum vector. Since these operators are restricted to the 2 j + 1 dimensional state space, both the polar angle and the azimuthal angle have discrete eigenstates. These two operators do not commute, and thus they have a different eigenvector basis. Their commutation rule reflects the commutation rule for the Cartesian components of angular momentum. The relation with coherent spin states is analyzed.

Expectation values and uncertainties of radial and angular variables for a three-dimensional coherent oscillator

Rainer W. Hasse

Calculates expectation values and uncertainties of the radial coordinate and momentum, and the azimuthal angle and angular momentum components for a three-dimensional harmonic oscillator in a coherent state. The operators corresponding to powers of the angular variable are defined by their Fourier expansions. For large distances of the particle from the origin, where the oscillator becomes classical, radial and angular uncertainty products approach the value h(cross)/ square root 2, except for the point of discontinuity, where the angular uncertainty becomes infinite. For small distances, where the oscillator tends to its quantum ground state, the radial uncertainty stays finite and the angular uncertainty product tends to zero. It is also shown that the concept of a polar momentum operator is meaningless.

Is there an Azimuthal Angle Observable?

H. S. Perlman, GORDON J. TROUP

The concept of an azimuthal-angle operator canonically conjugate to the z component of angular-momentum operator is known to present certain difficulties in quantum mechanics. These difficulties are resolved rigorously for the first time, and their implications are discussed.
