Spreading of damage in ferromagnetic thin films: Profiles and temporal evolution

Abstract

We numerically investigate the critical behavior of layered S=1/2 Ising ferromagnetic thin films with an enhanced surface coupling constant by using the spreading of damage technique through the Metropolis dynamics. We obtain that near the bulk critical spreading temperature, the Hamming distance profile changes its shape from a positive curvature profile for Js/J<1.4 to a negative curvature profile for Js/J>1.4, which is a signature of the reminiscent special surface-bulk transition which occurs in the semi-infinite system. Furthermore, we show that the temporal evolution of the damage front exhibits a typical exponential growth above critically while in the critical region the behavior is diffusive.

Application of the spreading of damage technique to the S=1/2 Ising thin film

I. V. Rojdestvenski, U.M.S. Costa

We apply the spreading of the damage technique to a S=1/2 Ising ferromagnetic thin film. We use Metropolis dynamics to calculate the temperature dependence of the Hamming distance as well as the Hamming distance distributions along the Markov chain. We suggest a modification of the algorithm for calculating the Hamming distance in the case of Metropolis dynamics and we discuss the results for the two-dimensional model obtained by the modified approach. For a film with three layers we present the thermal dependences of the above quantities. We also suggest a new way to introduce damage to the system as the difference in the boundary conditions. We discuss the results of this new approach for the two-dimensional model.

Damage Spreading in the Ising Model with a Special Metropolis Dynamics Approach

Ce-Jun Liu, H.-B. Schüttler, Jia-Zhen Hu

The time evolution of the Hamming distance (damage spreading) for the and Ising models on the square lattice is performed with a special metropolis dynamics algorithm. Two distinct regimes are observed according to the temperature range for both models: a low-temperature one where the distance in the long-time limit is finite and seems not to depend on the initial distance and the system size; a high-temperature one where the distance vanishes in the long-time limit. Using the finite size scaling method, the dynamical phase transition (damage spreading transition) temperature is obtained as for the Ising model.

Crossover of critical behavior in dynamic phase transitions of multilayer Ising model systems

Erol Vatansever, Mikel Quintana, Andreas Berger

We investigate the crossover of critical behavior for the dynamic phase transition (DPT) in ferromagnetic thin films using Monte Carlo simulations of the kinetic Ising model, focusing on the scaling behavior of the dynamic order parameter under a time-dependent external magnetic field. Specifically, we study the transition of the critical behavior of such multilayer film systems from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) as a function of the film thickness and the distance to the critical point, which enables dimensional crossover observations. Our results indicate that the effective critical exponents exhibit a clear transition in their scaling behavior, with thinner films showing 2D-like characteristics and thicker films displaying 3D-like behavior, for both the DPT and the thermodynamic phase transitions (TPT). Quantitatively, the crossover from 2D to 3D behavior occurs at larger film thicknesses for the DPT compared to the TPT, suggesting that DPT and TPT are governed by distinctly different length scales and underlying surface effects. These findings are in agreement with experimental observations in ultrathin Co films, where dynamic and thermodynamic critical exponents were found to differ. Therefore, our study provides an in-depth explanation for critical phenomena in thin-film ferromagnets driven by a time-dependent magnetic field. By comparing the dimensional crossover properties of both TPT and DPT, we present a comprehensive understanding of how thin-film geometry and surface effects influence the scaling laws and critical behavior in nonequilibrium systems.

Non-equilibrium critical behavior of Heisenberg thin films

Maria Shlyakhtich, Pavel Vladimirovich Prudnikov

In this work we study the non-equilibrium properties of Heisenberg ferromagnetic films using Monte Carlo simulations by short-time dynamic method. By exploring the short-time scaling dynamics, we have found thickness dependency of critical exponents z, θ′ and β/v for ferromagnetic thin film. For calculating the critical exponents of ferromagnetic films we considered systems with linear size L = 128 and layers number N = 2; 4; 6; 10. Starting from initial configurations, the system was updated with Metropolis algorithm at the critical temperatures

Damage spreading in the Ising model with a microcanonical constraint

F. G. Brady Moreira, Adauto J. F. de Souza, Ananias M. Mariz

We study damage spreading in the ferromagnetic Ising model, on the square lattice, by performing numerical simulations in the microcanonical ensemble. Although the damage spreads for all temperature values, a dynamical critical phenomenon is observed at ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{d}}$=1.020(2)${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{C}}$ (${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{C}}$ is the Curie temperature): For T\ensuremath{\ge}${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{d}}$ the damage D(t) is insensitive to its initial value D(0), while for T${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{d}}$ a weak dependence on D(0) is present in such a way that for each T there are two values of D(t) corresponding to the initial conditions D(0)1/2 and D(0)>1/2. We have also identified a convenient order parameter to characterize the transition occurring at ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{d}}$. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
