Abstract

Fluorescence excitation spectra of silver–argon van der Waals complexes are presented. An alternative experimental technique to laser evaporation has been used to produce the cold complexes. The van der Waals states observed correlate with the (4d10 5s1) 2S Ag ground state and (4d10 5p1)2P0 Ag first excited state. The excited state of the Ag–Ar complex is found to be 1235 cm−1 deep, which is unusually large for such metal–rare gas complexes. A perturbation due to a state correlating with the (4d9 5s2)2D metastable Ag state is also observed and analyzed.

Cold Anisotropically Interacting van der Waals Molecule: TiHe

N. Quirós, Naima Tariq, Timur V. Tscherbul +2 more

We have used laser ablation and helium buffer-gas cooling to produce titanium-helium van der Waals molecules at cryogenic temperatures. The molecules were detected through laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. Ground-state Ti(a^{3}F_{2})-He binding energies were determined for the ground and first rotationally excited states from studying equilibrium thermodynamic properties, and found to agree well with theoretical calculations based on newly calculated ab initio Ti-He interaction potentials, opening up novel possibilities for studying the formation, dynamics, and nonuniversal chemistry of van der Waals clusters at low temperatures.

Condensation of He Gas on Optically Excited Ag Atoms Below the Critical Temperature ( T<5.2K )

Zygmunt J. Jakubek, Qin Hui, Michio Takami

Laser induced fluorescence spectra of Ag atoms and their time profiles have been studied in cold He gas at temperatures 4.3--25 K and pressure $\ensuremath{\lesssim}1\mathrm{atm}$. The emission spectra following the excitation of the atomic $D2$ line consist of three narrow lines and three broadbands, which are assigned to transitions of Ag atoms and AgHe and ${\mathrm{AgHe}}_{2}$ exciplexes. Surprisingly long ( $\ensuremath{\gtrsim}300\mathrm{ns}$) effective emission lifetimes are observed at $T>{T}_{c}$ (5.2 K). The long lifetimes are the result of population trapping in the ${}^{2}{D}_{5/2}$ metastable state. At $T\ensuremath{\lesssim}{T}_{c}$, the effective lifetimes decrease to $\ensuremath{\lesssim}20\mathrm{ns}$ due to the condensation of He gas on the Ag atom in its ${}^{2}{D}_{5/2}$ state.

Van der Waals explosion of cold Rydberg clusters

D. Ciampini

Van der Waals interactions between ultracold atoms excited to high-lying Rydberg states can lead to \nstrongly correlated excitation dynamics [1]. In my talk I will present a direct observation in real space \nof the mechanical effect of the van der Waals force on individual Rydberg atoms excited at close range \n[2]. Clusters of Rydberg atoms are created by first generating a small number of seed excitations in a \nmagneto-optical trap, followed by off-resonant excitation that leads to a chain of facilitated excitation \nevents. Our experimental results agree well with a numerical simulation of the van der Waals explosion.

Rydberg-State Double-Well Potentials of Van der Waals Molecules

Tomasz Urbańczyk, Andrzej Kędziorski, Marek Krośnicki +1 more

Recent progress in studies of Rydberg double-well electronic energy states of MeNg (Me = 12-group atom, Ng = noble gas atom) van der Waals (vdW) molecules is presented and analysed. The presentation covers approaches in experimental studies as well as ab initio-calculations of potential energy curves (PECs). The analysis is shown in a broader context of Rydberg states of hetero- and homo-diatomic molecules with PECs possessing complex 'exotic' structure. Laser induced fluorescence (LIF) excitation spectra and dispersed emission spectra employed in the spectroscopical characterization of Rydberg states are presented on the background of the diverse spectroscopic methods for their investigations such as laser vaporization-optical resonance (LV-OR), pump-and-probe methods, and polarization labelling spectroscopy. Important and current state-of-the-art applications of Rydberg states with irregular potentials in photoassociation (PA), vibrational and rotational cooling, molecular clocks, frequency standards, and molecular wave-packet interferometry are highlighted.

Alignment of Hg–Ar van der Waals molecule photofragments following photodissociation

C. J. K. Quayle, I. M. Bell, Endre Takács +3 more

We have measured the alignment of the photofragments produced by photodissociation of Hg–Ar van der Waals molecules using light around 253.7 nm. The molecules are produced in the X0+ ground state in a supersonic expansion. Tunable laser light close to the Hg 6 1S0–6 3P1 transition is then used to excite the molecule to the B1± state, in which it dissociates. The alignment of the resulting Hg(3P1) asymptotic atoms is probed by tuning a delayed second laser to the 435.8 nm Hg 6 3P1–7 3S1 atomic transition and monitoring the subsequent fluorescence on the 7 3S1–6 3P2 transition around 546.1 nm. These measurements have been made, we believe for the first time, as a function of dissociating energy from very close to threshold to higher energies. The alignment shows a significant rise with increasing photon energy in line with a semiclassical picture of orbital locking at lower energies and rapid decoupling at higher energies. The results exhibit good agreement with the results of a fully quantum mechanical theory of the system.

Atom Symmetry Break and Metastable Level Coupling in Rare Gas Atom-Surface van der Waals Interaction

M. Boustimi, B. Viaris de Lesegno, J. Baudon +2 more

van der Waals interactions between an atom and a planar surface exhibit a quadrupolar component in D(2)(z)-D(2)/3 (D, atomic dipole; ź, normal to surface). This coupling is responsible for an atom symmetry break, mixing levels of the same parity such as metastable 3P0, 3P2 levels of rare gas atoms. The strongly exoenergic 3P0-3P2 transition in Ar and Kr is observed by a time-of-flight technique, using as a surface the edge of a copper slit. The results confirm the predicted strong peaking of the angular distribution of inelastically scattered atoms and give a good estimate of the transition probability.
