Quantum Phase of Induced Dipoles Moving in a Magnetic Field

Abstract

We derive the quantum phase accompanying a neutral particle (with no permanent electric dipole moment) moving in an area where a nonuniform electric field and a uniform magnetic field are simultaneously applied. Such a quantum phase can be ascribed to the sum of the Aharonov-Bohm phases of the charges constituting the neutral particle. An experimental configuration much more practical than a previous suggestion is proposed to test for the phase. The possible nonzero superfluid velocity in the ground state of the ${}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ condensate is theoretically demonstrated.

Quantum phase of an electric dipole moving in a magnetic dipole field

Tae-Yeon Lee

It is shown that a neutral particle with an electric dipole moment acquires a quantum phase of Aharonov-Bohm type which is induced by a magnetic dipole field, in addition to the He-McKellar-Wilkens phase which requires a magnetic monopole field. Therefore this phase is measurable in principle. This phase is related to the Casella phase in the sense of the electromagnetic duality.

Comment on “Quantum Phase of Induced Dipoles Moving in a Magnetic Field”

C. R. Hägen

It has recently been suggested that an Aharonov-Bohm phase should be capable of detection using beams of neutral polarizable particles. A more careful analysis of the proposed experiment suffices to show, however, that it cannot be performed regardless of the strength of the external electric and magnetic fields.

On the feasibility of detecting an Aharonov-Bohm phase shift in neutral matter

Yuki Sato, R. E. Packard

It has been predicted that, in the presence of combined radial electric field and axial magnetic field, superfluid 4 He in a torus will have a persistent current in its ground state. This surprising result arises from non-cancellation of the Aharonov-Bohm phase shifts associated with the opposite charges in the induced electric dipole moment of the neutral 4 He atoms. We briefly review this prediction and describe our proposed experiment. In this feasibility study we show that by applying laboratory accessible electric and magnetic fields, a superfluid 4 He interferometer (SHeQUID) will have sufficient sensitivity to conclusively determine whether or not the predicted physical phenomenon exists.

Quantum phases for moving charges and dipoles in an electromagnetic field and fundamental equations of quantum mechanics

Alexander L. Kholmetskii, Tolga Yarman, O. Missevitch +1 more

We analyze the quantum phase effects for point-like charges and electric (magnetic) dipoles under a natural assumption that the observed phase for a dipole represents the sum of corresponding phases for charges composing this dipole. This way we disclose two novel quantum phases for charged particles, which we named as complementary electric Aharonov-Bohm (A-B) phase and complementary magnetic A-B phase, respectively. We reveal that these phases are derived from the Schrödinger equation only in the case, where the operator of momentum is re-defined via the replacement of the canonical momentum of particle by the sum of its mechanical momentum and interactional field momentum for a system of charged particles. The related alteration should be introduced to Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations, too, and implications of this modification are discussed.

Quantum dynamics of magnetic and electric dipoles and the geometric phase

Claudio Furtado, Carlos Alberto de Lima Ribeiro

We study the quantum dynamics of a neutral particle that posseses a permanent magnetic and electric dipole moments in the presence of an electromagnetic field. The analysis of this dynamics demonstrates the appearance of a quantum phase that combines the Aharonov-Casher effect and the He-Mckellar-Wilkens effect. We demonstrate that this phase is a special case of the geometric quantum phase. A series of field configurations where this phase would be found is presented. A generalized Casella-type effect is found in one of these configurations. A physical scenario for the quantum phase in an interferometric experiment is proposed.

The Aharonov–Bohm effect in neutral liquids

Edouard B Sonin

The Aharonov–Bohm effect was discovered as a quantum-mechanical effect for charged particles, but it has its counterpart in classical wave mechanics. The Aharonov–Bohm interference arises at the scattering of a sound wave by a vortex in classical and quantum hydrodynamics. This interference leads to a transverse force between quasiparticles and vortices in superfluids and superconductors. The Aharonov–Bohm effect was also generalized to neutral particles with magnetic or electric dipole momenta. The Aharonov–Bohm effect for charge particles and its modification for magnetic momenta (the Aharonov–Casher effect) have already been experimentally observed, and the efforts to detect the Aharonov–Bohm effect for electrically polarized neutral particles are on the way. A possible system for this detection is a Bose-condensate of excitons in a double quantum well. Observation of the Aharonov–Bohm effect in this system would provide direct evidence of Bose–Einstein condensation.
