Green functions in the renormalized many-body perturbation theory

V. Janiš

I review the way the many-body Green functions are used to renormalize the perturbation theory of correlated fermions. The Green functions are introduced to implement systematically dynamical corrections to the static mean-field theory. The renormalizations enter the perturbation theory via self-consistent evaluations of one-particle and two-particle Green functions. The one-particle self-consistency is discussed within the Baym-Kadanoff construction. We point to an inherent dichotomy of the Baym-Kadanoff approach in the relation between one and two-particle Green functions. They are the Schwinger-Dyson equation, directly derived from the generating Luttinger-Ward functional, and the Ward identity. The latter imposes a severe restriction on the two-particle irreducible vertex and is not guaranteed in the Baym-Kadanoff approach. No approximate theory is capable to obey both relations. I further discuss the two-particle approach with two-particle renormalizations that offers a way to reconcile the Schwinger-Dyson equation and the Ward identity. The two-particle irreducible vertex from the critical Bethe-Salpeter equation becomes a generating functional in the two-particle renormalization of the perturbation theory. The irreducible vertex is used in the Ward identity to determine the order parameter beyond the critical point and in the Bethe-Salpeter equation representing the vertex of the Schwinger-Dyson equation to determine the spectral self-energy in such a way that the thermodynamic critical behavior from both equations is qualitatively the same. Finally, I discuss a static mean-field-like approximation with a renormalized effective interaction determined self-consistently that leads to a qualitatively correct description of strong electron correlations in impurity and lattice models.

Dephasing effects on the low-energy dynamics of ϕ4-model

In this paper, we investigate the Lindblad dynamics arising due to single particle loss and local dephasing in a d-dimensional nonrelativistic quantum system. Using Schwinger–Keldysh functional techniques, we derive the static mean field equation for the symmetry broken phase. Fluctuations over mean field are studied within the Bogoliubov approximation, and the momentum distribution and effective temperature are calculated. An effective temperature arises which depends on the dephasing rate [Formula: see text] and mean field particle density. Furthermore, a perturbative renormalization group (RG) upto one loop order is used to study the underlying dynamics of the model. The conditions for the system to be perturbative are obtained.

Far-from-equilibrium dynamics of ultra-cold Fermi gases

Matthias Kronenwett

In this thesis, far-from-equilibrium dynamics of fermionic quantum gases is discussed utilising functional quantum field theoretical methods. Employing the Schwinger-Keldysh path integral, real-time Schwinger-Dyson/Kadanoff-Baym dynamic equations for the two-point correlation functions are derived from the two-particle irreducible (2PI) effective action. For two specific models, these dynamic equations are investigated further. (a) For an N-fold spin-degenerate ultra-cold Fermi gas, non-perturbative approximation schemes based on either a loop or a 1/N expansion of the 2PI effective action are presented. Adopting these approximations, the long-time evolution of a homogeneous Fermi gas with N=2 after an initial preparation far from thermal equilibrium is thoroughly studied in one spatial dimension. Depending on the total energy, the gas is found to evolve into thermal as well as non-thermal states, the latter becoming manifest in violating the fluctuation-dissipation relation. (b) A similar 1/N expansion is derived for the SU(N) symmetric Kondo lattice model. At leading order, the mean-field dynamic equations of the U=0 Anderson model are recovered. At next-to-leading order (NLO), both spin-flip and direct interactions between localised atoms and conduction band atoms are taken into account non-perturbatively into the dynamic equations. This allows future studies of possibly existing novel phases in coupling regimes where the Kondo screening and RKKY-type interactions are competing.
