Abstract

The two coupled spinon-holon chains are investigated. One finds that for the set of parameters which allows us to map the model into two coupled Hubbard chains tunnelling occurs and the Luttinger liquid is destroyed. In addition we find that t perpendicular to 2 /J perpendicular to >>t/sub /// 2 /J/sub /// preserves the Luttinger liquid.

Bosonization of the constrained spinon-holon model

D. Schmeltzer

We present a bosonization method for one-dimensional nonrelativistic fermions with spin. This method is based on the Jordan-Wigner transformation and can be used directly in the strong-coupling limit. We apply this method to the constrained spinon-holon model (at each site we have either a holon or a spinon, in each bond the holon and spinon current vanishes) and show that this model is a Luttinger liquid.

Space-time tunneling bosonization: An application to theN-coupled Luttinger chains

D. Schmeltzer

The space-time tunneling bosonization has been introduced to study N-coupled Luttinger liquids. The interaction is separated into a forward exchange and a cooperon part. At T=0 the cooperon part is described by tunneling events which form a Coulomb gas in the plasma phase. At T\ensuremath{\ne}0 we ignore the cooperon part and show that the correlation functions show a Luttinger-liquid behavior. In the limit N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}, we extract the two-dimensional behavior and show that for a certain range of parameters the Luttinger liquid survives.

Exactly solvable model of N coupled Luttinger chains

Lorenz Bartosch, Peter Kopietz

We calculate the exact Green function of a special model of N coupled Luttinger chains with arbitrary interchain hopping ${\mathrm{t}}_{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\perp}}}$. The model is exactly solvable via bosonization if the interchain interaction does not fall off in the direction perpendicular to the chains. For any finite N we find Luttinger liquid behavior and explicitly calculate the anomalous dimension ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{(\mathrm{N})}$. However, the Luttinger liquid state does not preclude coherent interchain hopping. We also show that ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{(\mathrm{N})}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0 for N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}, so that in the limit of infinitely many chains we obtain a Fermi liquid.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of coupled Luttinger liquids

Laura Foini, Thierry Giamarchi

The dynamics of two initially tunnel-coupled chains of bosonic atoms after a quench in the tunneling strength is studied, and the correlation functions of relative phase (directly measured in interference experiments), relative density, and current are computed.

Tunneling between Luttinger liquids

Paul Fendley, Chetan Nayak

We consider the problem of tunneling between spinless one-dimensional (1D) Luttinger-liquid chains. We show how to map the problem onto the four-state chiral clock model together with a free boson for the total charge mode. We use a variety of results, some of them exact, from the integrable chiral Potts model and the study of commensurate/incommensurate transitions to deduce the physics of coupled Luttinger liquids. For those intrachain interaction strengths for which interchain tunneling is relevant, we find that it can lead to the formation of symmetric and antisymmetric bands with split Fermi surfaces, depending on the relative strengths of interchain tunneling and interchain interactions. With split Fermi surfaces, interchain transport is coherent. It is not possible to have two gapless Fermi surfaces with the same Fermi momentum when interchain tunneling is relevant. However, interchain interactions can drive the formation of a gap, in which case interchain transport will be incoherent. We comment on the possible relevance of our results to c-axis transport in high-${T}_{c}$ superconductors.

Phases of two coupled Luttinger liquids

Heinz J. Schulz

A model of two interacting one-dimensional fermion systems (``Luttinger liquids'') coupled by single-particle hopping is investigated. Bosonization allows a number of exact statements to be made. In particular, for forward scattering only, the model contains two massless boson sectors and an Ising-type critical sector. For general repulsive interactions, there is a spin excitation gap and either d-type pairing or orbital antiferromagnetic fluctuations dominate. It is argued that the same behavior is also found for strong interactions. A possible scenario for the crossover to a Fermi liquid in a many-chain system is discussed. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.
