Diamagnetic structure of Rb in intense magnetic fields

Abstract

We report a study of the Rydberg levels of Rb in intense magnetic fields. In our experiment the field is sufficiently strong to dominate the Coulomb interaction in states of high principal quantum number. We have observed some simple systematic structure which is apparent throughout the spectrum and present a semiclassical model which is in good agreement with our observations.

Diamagnetic Structure of Na Rydberg States

Myron L. Zimmerman, Jarbas Caiado de Castro, Daniel Kleppner

We present an experimental survey of a group of Rydberg states of sodium in magnetic fields up to 6 T, where levels from different terms overlap and interact strongly. The observed energy levels and relative line intensities for even-parity ${m}_{l}=1$ terms in the vicinity $n=28$ are in good agreement with calculations based on a numerical diagonalization using spherical basis states in the range $n=25\ensuremath{-}31$.

Diamagnetic Rydberg atom: Confrontation of calculated and observed spectra

Chun-ho Iu, George R. Welch, Michael M. Kash +3 more

We present a detailed comparison of the observed and computed negative- and positive-energy spectrum of a Rydberg atom in a strong magnetic field. The study extends from -30 to +30 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$ at a field of 6 T. The experimental resolution is sufficiently high to provide well-resolved spectra over the entire range. The spectrum calculated for hydrogen is in remarkable agreement with the spectrum observed in lithium.

Rydberg Atoms In Parallel Electric And Magnetic Fields

Robert L. Waterland

I have calculated the energy spectrum of a highly excited atom which lies in parallel, static electric and magnetic fields. In parallel fields the Coulomb quantum numbers n and m are still "good" quantum numbers but 1 is not: the calculation is for n = 30, m = 1 atoms.;The eigenvalues were obtained by semi-classical quantisation of first-order classical perturbation theory and have been calculated for a large range of electric and magnetic field strengths. The results are in good agreement with those found from first-order degenerate quantum perturbation theory.;The semi-classical analysis provides a correlation diagram connecting the Stark effect states to those of the diamagnetic effect.

Paschen-Back effect and Rydberg-state diamagnetism in vapor-cell electromagnetically induced transparency

Lu Ma, David Alexander Anderson, Georg A. Raithel

We report on rubidium vapor-cell Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a 0.7~T magnetic field where all involved levels are in the hyperfine Paschen-Back regime, and the Rydberg state exhibits a strong diamagnetic interaction with the magnetic field. Signals from both $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ and $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ are present in the EIT spectra. This feature of isotope-mixed Rb cells allows us to measure the field strength to within a $\pm 0.12$\% relative uncertainty. The measured spectra are in excellent agreement with the results of a Monte Carlo calculation and indicate unexpectedly large Rydberg-level dephasing rates. Line shifts and broadenings due to small inhomogeneities of the magnetic field are included in the model.

Calculation of the Energy Spectra of Atom Rb in Strong Magnetic Fields

Lianjun Liu, Zhehua Zhang, Dao-Neng Gao +3 more

The energy spectra and oscillator strength of atom Rb in strong magnetic fields are calculated. The wavefunctions obtained by an improved potential model proposed by some of us are chosen as the zero-order ones. The results show that the diamagnetic term seems to affect substantially only high Rydberg states. And there is a maximum of oscillator strength in each n-manifold, which varies with n increased.

For pt. I see ibid., vol.21, no.21, p.3473-98 (1988). The semiclassical approach based on the secular perturbation method, primarily introduced by Solov'ev (1982) to study the pure diamagnetism of hydrogen in the weak-field limit, is extended to the case where the atom is subjected to electric and magnetic fields both parallel to the 0z direction. The structure of the manifold of states with principal quantum number n is governed by the existence of an approximate constant of motion and the states can be classified into three groups. The semiclassical Bohr-Sommerfeld quantisation rule allows the energy of the states to be calculated. The main properties of the spectra and their evolution when one of the fields increases are analysed. An original comparison between the structure of the pure diamagnetic n multiplet with azimuthal quantum number M not=0 and the structure of the n, M=0 multiplet with parallel fields is proposed.
