The spherical top propagator and spectral operator kernel for all spins are evaluated in terms of new rotational coordinates that are related to the Euler angles in a simple way. Both operator kernels are expressible exactly as sums over classical paths. The angular momentum wavefunctions are single-valued functions of the new rotational coordinates for all values of j.

The recently established existence of spherical harmonic functions, Yℓm(θ,ϕ) for half-odd-integer values of ℓ and m, allows for the introduction into quantum chemistry of explicit electron spin-coordinates; i.e. spherical polar angles θs,ϕs, that specify the orientation of the spin angular momentum vector in space. In this coordinate representation the spin angular momentum operators, S2,Sz, are represented by the usual differential operators in spherical polar coordinates (commonly used for L2,Lz), and their electron-spin eigenfunctions are sinθsexp(±ϕs/2). This eigenfunction representation has the pedagogical advantage over the abstract spin eigenfunctions, α,β, that ``integration over spin coordinates'' is a true integration (over the angles θs,ϕs). In addition they facilitate construction of many electron wavefunctions in which the electron spins are neither parallel nor antiparallel, but inclined at an intermediate angle. In particular this may have application to the description of EPR correlation experiments.
A path integral for spinning particles is developed. It is a one-particle theory, equivalent to the usual quantum mechanics. Our method employs a classical model for spin which is quantized by path integration. The model, the spherical top, is a natural one from a group-theoretic point of view and has been used before in a similar context. The curvature and multiple connectedness of the top coordinate space [SO(3)] provide some interesting features in the sum over paths. The Green's function which results from this procedure propagates all spins, and recovery of the usual Pauli spinors from this formalism is achieved by projection to a specific spin subspace.
