Abstract

We consider the stability of Bragg solitons in a resonant photonic crystal composed of alternating layers of dielectric and two-level atoms. Effective steering of the slow gap soliton is shown to be approached by means of incoherent pump of its small length.

We consider the interaction and stability of gap solitons in a one-dimensional, resonant, photonic crystal with a defect state produced by a linear localized mode, or by an incoherent pump. Soliton propagation is investigated using both an analytical treatment and the direct numerical integration of the two-wave Maxwell-Bloch equations. Our results demonstrate that the soliton can be trapped, reflected from, or tunnel through the defect state.

Gap soliton memory in a resonant photonic crystal

We consider the interaction of two coherent optical pulses in a one-dimensional, resonant photonic crystal which includes a defect produced by a coherent pump. Using numerical methods, the defect is shown to provide a selective reversible trap for a gap soliton mediated by the long-range coupling. This opens up new opportunities for signal transmission control, light localization and a simple one bit optical memory.

Light-by-light control in a resonant photonic crystal

The interaction between the exact gap solitons (GS) and localized linear modes in the 1D resonant photonic crystal (RPC) is investigated by means of both analytical treatment and numerical integration of the bi-directional Maxwell-Bloch equations. This interaction is shown to modify the GS dynamics in the most radical way. That is, the GS is shown to be trapped or reflected and the direction and GS velocity can be changed as a result of the inelastic collision of the two exact GS in the area of localization of the linear mode of the PC. The same result is also valid when the GS traverses the length of the atoms which are incoherently inverted. Therefore, this study demonstrates the possibility of the management for an intense GS pulse by means of a weak linear field or by a low-intensity incoherent pump, that is, without creating a defect.

Slow light generation in a resonance photonic crystal

We demonstrate interesting and previously unforeseen properties of a pair of gap solitons in a resonant photonic crystal which can be predicted and explained in a physically transparent form using both analytical and numerical methods. The most important result is the fact that we are able to show that the oscillating gap soliton created by the presence of an inversion inside the crystal can be manipulated by means of a proper choice of bit rate, phase and amplitude modulation. Using this approach, we were able to obtain qualitatively different regimes of the resonant photonic crystal operation. A noticeable observation is that both the delay time and amplitude difference must exceed a certain level to ensure effective control over soliton dynamics. The modification of the defect that accomplishes the soliton trapping can make the dynamics of N soliton trains in the resonant photonic crystal with defects even more interesting and is a subject of the future work.
