Abstract

We propose a scheme for obtaining an electromagnetically induced grating in an asymmetric semiconductor quantum well (QW) structure via Fano interference. In our structure, owing to Fano interference, the diffraction intensity of the grating, especially the first-order diffraction, can be significantly enhanced. The diffraction efficiency of the grating can be controlled efficiently by tuning the control field intensity, the interaction length, the coupling strength of tunneling, etc. This investigation may be used to develop novel photonic devices in semiconductor QW systems.

Asymmetric light diffraction of two-dimensional electromagnetically induced grating with PT symmetry in asymmetric double quantum wells

Si-Cong Tian, Ren-Gang Wan, Lijie Wang +7 more

An asymmetric double semiconductor quantum well is proposed to realize two-dimensional parity-time (PT) symmetry and an electromagnetically induced grating. In such a nontrivial grating with PT symmetry, the incident probe photons can be diffracted to selected angles depending on the spatial relationship of the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index. Such results are due to the interference mechanism between the amplitude and phase of the grating and can be manipulated by the probe detuning, modulation amplitudes of the standing wave fields, and interaction length of the medium. Such a system may lead to new approaches of observing PT-symmetry-related phenomena and has potential applications in photoelectric devices requiring asymmetric light transport using semiconductor quantum wells.

Controllable two-dimensional asymmetric diffraction grating via vortex light in a semiconductor double quantum wells system

Kunpeng Zhao, Duo Zhang, Junbing Guo +1 more

Abstract We present a theoretical scheme to realize two-dimensional (2D) asymmetric diffraction grating in a five-level inverted Y-type asymmetric double semiconductor quantum wells (SQWs) structure with resonant tunneling. The SQW structure interacts with a weak probe laser field, a spatially independent 2D standing-wave (SW) field, and a Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) vortex field, respectively. The results indicate that the diffraction patterns are highly sensitive to amplitude modulation and phase modulation. Because of the existence of vortex light, it is possible to realize asymmetric high-order diffraction in the SQW structure, and then a 2D asymmetric grating is established. By adjusting the detunings of the probe field, vortex field, and SW field, as well as the interaction length, diffraction intensity, and direction of the 2D asymmetric electromagnetically induced grating (EIG) can be controlled effectively. In addition, the number of orbital angular momenta (OAM) and beam waist parameter can be used to modulate the diffraction intensity and energy transfer of the probe light in different regions. High-order diffraction intensity is enhanced and high-efficiency 2D asymmetric diffraction grating with different diffraction patterns is obtained in the scheme. Such 2D asymmetric diffraction grating may be beneficial to the research of optical communication and innovative semiconductor quantum devices.

Laser-induced diffraction grating in asymmetric double quantum well nanostructure

Forough Bozorgzadeh, Mostafa Sahrai

Abstract We analyze the electromagnetically induced grating in a four-level inverted-Y double quantum well system. Based on the electromagnetically induced transparency, the Fraunhofer diffraction of a weak probe laser field is theoretically investigated. It is shown that the diffraction patterns are sensitive to both the absorptive and dispersive properties of the system. The effect of coupling and pumping fields intensity, frequency detuning, the relative phase of fields and the sample interaction length on diffraction pattern is then discussed. Our scheme may find potential applications in designing the semiconductor quantum well-based photonic devices, such as all-optical switches at low light levels.

Two-Dimension Asymmetric Electromagnetically Induced Grating in Rydberg Atoms

Binbin Wang, Dong Yan, Yi-Mou Liu +1 more

We investigate the realization and manipulation of a two-dimension (2D), asymmetric, electromagnetically induced grating (EIG) in a sample of Rydberg atoms exhibiting the van der Waals (vdW) interactions. The scheme relies on the application of a strong control field and a weak probe field, with the former periodically modulated in a 2D plane and the latter incident perpendicular to the 2D plane. We find that the probe field can be diffracted into an asymmetric intensity distribution depending on the relevant modulation parameters of the control field, as well as the density and length of the atomic sample. In particular, higher-order diffraction intensities can be enhanced in different ways as the vdW interaction, modulation strength, or sample length is increased. It is also of interest that the asymmetric diffraction distribution can be shifted to different quadrants by choosing appropriate modulation phases of the control field. These results may be used to develop new photonic devices with asymmetric diffraction properties required in future all-optical networks.

Switching of amplification to absorption with enhanced Kerr nonlinearity in double quantum wells via Fano interference

Rohit Mukherjee, Nitu Borgohain, Rohit Hazra

Abstract In this communication, we investigate linear and nonlinear (Kerr) responses in an asymmetric double quantum wells induced by a weak probe and controlled by a signal field under double Λ excitation via the Fano interference. By carefully tuning the control field intensities, probe detuning and relative phase of the interacting electromagnetic fields, the amplification as well as the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be achieved to an efficient level in the proposed scheme. We observe that the absorption of the probe and signal fields decrease with the decrease in the strength of the Fano interference (ξ), while the Kerr nonlinearity enhances by almost ten times, reaching a value of the order ~ 10 − 10 m 2 / V 2 under the regime of EIT. The results presented may serve as a valuable reference for designing optimized slow and fast-light, solid-based optical switching devices, offering significant advantages over those based on atomic media.

Phase-controlled electromagnetically induced symmetric and asymmetric grating in an asymmetric three-coupled quantum well

Ali Akbar Naeimi, Elham Darabi, Ali Mortezapour +1 more

Fraunhofer light diffraction of a weak probe field passing through an asymmetric three-coupled quantum well, which is driven by a standing wave and two coupling laser fields, is investigated. Depending on which transitions are coupled by the probe and standing field, two schemes are considered. It is demonstrated that owing to the closed-loop transition, optical properties and the diffraction pattern of the probe field in both schemes are highly affected by the relative phase of the applied fields and can be controlled by this parameter. Moreover, it is shown that the proposed schemes have multifunction capabilities. In the first scheme, as a result of varying relative phase, the electromagnetically induced absorption phase grating turns to the electromagnetically induced gain phase grating with remarkable efficiency, while in the latter scheme, a significant result is revealed: Tuning the relative phase can lead to inducing optical parity-time symmetry, which gives rise to an asymmetric diffraction grating. Such an all-optical phase-sensitive operation could be useful in optical switching and optical communications.
