Atom Optical Elements Based on Near-field Grating Sequences

Abstract

We develop a Talbot-optical approach to grating-based atom optics. The method is used to describe matter wave diffraction produced by a near-field sequence of gratings. The possibilities for de Broglie wavefront design are demonstrated through a series of examples involving two consecutive gratings.

Atomic focusing and near field imaging: A combination for producing small-period nanostructures

We present a scheme which combines focusing of atomic de Broglie waves by standing light waves and fractional Talbot imaging to produce nanostructures. Masking of the incoming atomic wave by an absorptive grating is used to eliminate atom-optical aberrations that would otherwise wash out the fractional Talbot images. The scheme allows the creation of structures of very small feature size as well as small period.

Fractional Talbot images in the de Broglie near-field of atoms diffracted by a dispersive light grating allow the measurement of the quantum state of an electromagnetic field in a cavity, in the optical domain.

High-order Talbot fringes for atomic matter waves

S. Nowak, Christian Kurtsiefer, Tilman Pfau +1 more

We observe the interference of de Broglie waves in the diffraction near field of a microfabricated grating. The reduction of the grating period by self-imaging of second to seventh order is spatially resolved. We investigate the dependence of this effect on the de Broglie wavelength by a time-to-flight technique.

High-order Talbot fringes for atomic matter waves

Summary form only given.Recent developments in atom optics have led to different approaches to lithographic techniques with neutral atoms. One of these is the use of diffraction from free-standing masks, which is sometimes called atom holography. There, narrow structures arise due to matter-wave interference in the Fresnel regime. In the presented experiment, we demonstrate that the wave nature of atoms can be used to produce periodic structures with small periodicities. We used the Talbot effect in the Fresnel diffraction regime behind a microfabricated transmission grating. The Talbot effect is the self-imaging of a grating of periodicity d illuminated with plane coherent waves.

Near-field imaging of atom diffraction gratings: The atomic Talbot effect

We have demonstrated the Talbot effect, the self-imaging of a periodic structure, with atom waves. We have measured the successive recurrence of these self-images as a function of the distance from the imaged grating. This is a near-field interference effect, which has several possible applications that are discussed.

We demonstrate efficient specular reflection of He atoms and molecules from inexpensive, readily available, and robust optical gratings. The reflection mechanism is based on diffraction of the de Broglie waves by the fine grating ridges.
