Analytical treatment of the continuous wave driving of a two-level atom without making the rotating wave approximation

Chris O’Brien, Marlan O. Scully

In a straightforward manner, we utilize Floquet theory and adiabatic elimination to derive an analytic expression for a monochromatically driven two-level atom, without making the rotating wave approximation. We show that the counter-rotating terms dropped in the rotating wave approximation are responsible for three major effects. First an ac-Stark phase shift of the driven transition, second increased excited state population from far-detuned driving of the Lorentzian line, and third extra frequencies in the population dynamics that result in “wiggles.” The analytic result agrees well with numerical simultations over a wide range of parameters.

Generalized rotating-wave approximation for the two-qubit quantum Rabi model

Yuyu Zhang, Qing‐Hu Chen

The generalized rotating-wave approximation (GRWA) is presented for the two-qubit quantum Rabi model. The analytical expressions in the zeroth-order approximation recover the previous adiabatic ones. The counter-rotating-wave terms can be eliminated by performing the first-order corrections. An effective solvable Hamiltonian with the same form as the ordinary RWA one is then obtained, giving very accurate eigenvalues and eigenstates. Energy levels in the present GRWA are in accordance with the numerical exact diagonalization ones in a wide range of coupling strengths. The population dynamics in the GRWA are in quantitative agreement with the numerical results and exhibit the absence of collapses clearly, revealing the effects of the counter-rotating wave.

Raman transitions without adiabatic elimination: A simple and accurate treatment

Rui Hana, Hui Khoon Ng, Berthold‐Georg Englert

Driven Raman processes — nearly resonant two-photon transitions through an intermediate state that is non-resonantly coupled and does not acquire a sizeable population — are commonly treated with a simplified description in which the intermediate state is removed by adiabatic elimination. While the adiabatic-elimination approximation is reliable when the detuning of the intermediate state is quite large, it cannot be trusted in other situations, and it does not allow one to estimate the population in the eliminated state. We introduce an alternative method that keeps all states in the description, without increasing the complexity by much. An integro-differential equation of Lippmann-Schwinger type generates a hierarchy of approximations, but very accurate results are already obtained in the lowest order.
