Abstract

We give a preliminary report on the bound state quantization of many-fermion systems based on the semiclassical expansion of the path integral in the generalized coherent state representation. As a particular case we consider the quantization around static Hartree-Fock solutions, which reproduces the RPA spectrum such that the correlation energy is naturally included.

Path integral approach for many-fermion systems and an extension of the time-dependent Hartree-Fock method

Kazunari Kaneko

The quantization of an extended time-dependent Hartree-Fock equation is performed by using the path integral formalism. The path integral form of time evolution operator between initial and final states is obtained with the use of the completeness relation of the fermion coherent states. It is shown that the extended time-dependent Hartree-Fock equation is naturally derived as a classical limit of the path integral.

A semiclassical treatment of path integrals for the spin system

Hiroshi Kuratsuji, Yutaka Mizobuchi

Starting with path integrals in the SU(2) coherent state representation, the semiclassical approximation of the propagator for the spin system is investigated. By extending the idea of the semiclassical expansion method, which was developed in the usual phase-space path integrals, to the path integrals in the curved phase space, which is characteristic of the SU(2) coherent states, we obtain a closed form for the semiclassical propagator. As an application, we discuss the semiclassical quantization condition for the spin system.

Path integral and boson-fermion expansion in many-fermion systems: Lipkin model

Kazunari Kaneko

In a previous paper, a quantum-mechanical formulation involving both mean fields and independent-particle fields in many-fermion systems was proposed using the path-integral technique. Then the semiclassical calculation of the energy spectra was performed, and the quantization rule was derived by applying a stationary phase approximation on the path integral. In this paper, a boson-fermion expansion is derived from our formulation using Dirac quantization. As an illustration, the Lipkin model is utilized.

Path integral and Sommerfeld quantization

Mikoto Matsuda, Takehisa Fujita

The path integral formulation can reproduce the right energy spectrum of the harmonic oscillator potential, but it cannot resolve the Coulomb potential problem. This is because the path integral cannot properly take into account the boundary condition, which is due to the presence of the scattering states in the Coulomb potential system. On the other hand, the Sommerfeld quantization can reproduce the right energy spectrum of both harmonic oscillator and Coulomb potential cases since the boundary condition is effectively taken into account in this semiclassical treatment. The basic difference between the two schemes should be that no constraint is imposed on the wave function in the path integral while the Sommerfeld quantization rule is derived by requiring that the state vector should be a single-valued function. The limitation of the semiclassical method is also clarified in terms of the square well and $δ(x)$ function potential models.

Path Integral Approach to Many-Body Systems and Classical Quantization of Time-Dependent Mean Field

Hiroshi Kuratsuji, T. Suzuki

We present the path integral formalism of many-body systems based on the representation of generalized coherent states. We give the integral representation for the transition amplitude by utilizing the characteristic property of the coherent states and discuss its classical limit through the method of stationary phase. Applying to the bound state problem, we arrive at the classical quantization rule for the periodic mean field solutions, the utility of which is briefly discussed.

Semiclassical Quantization in Many Dimensions

Roy D. Williams

We examine the semiclassical limit of the quantum energy spectrum in many dimensions: by means of a WKB-like ansatz leading to Einstein-Brillouin-Keller (EBK) quantization, by means of a path integral, hence associating a bound state with a particular classical periodic trajectory, and by the Birkhoff-Gustavson (BG) transformation to action-angle variables. We extend the EBK method to many-fermion systems using coherent states; and apply both EBK using surfaces of section, and the BG transformation to an SU(3) schematic nuclear shell model. We describe a new algorithm for finding periodic trajectories of a Lagrangian system with polynomial potential. It is applied to the Henon-Heiles system with good results, and these trajectories are used to quantize the system. The EBK and BG methods have some success, while periodic trajectory quantization fails. We discuss possible reasons for this failure and future approaches to these problems.
