Optical switching between bistable soliton states of the second kind

Abstract

Optical switching between bistable soliton states of the second kind is demonstrated numerically when the amplification of the input solitons is suitably adjusted. The numerical amplification study is supplemented by Anderson's [Phys. Rev. A 27, 3135 (1983)] variational approach, which sheds considerable light on the observed numerical behavior, although it is not able to predict switching.

Evanescently induced optical switching between bistable soliton states of the second kind

Sandra Eix, Richard H. Enns, S. S. Rangnekar

Optical switching between bistable soliton states of the second kind is demonstrated numerically when two parallel, straight optical fibers are evanescently coupled. The numerical switching study is supplemented by a variational analysis which provides a preliminary guide to what ranges of input parameters should be chosen for the switching simulations.

A New Type of Bistable Switching in Two-Dimensional Nonlinear Optical Superlattices

Zhenlin Wang, Zhen-ju Yang, Nai-Ben Min

We investigate theoretically optical response in a two-dimensional optical superlattice with Kerr-type nonlinearity. We find that in addition to the bistability reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. 71 (1993) 1003 by Xu et al., a new type of bistable switching behavior exists. This bistability is based on the occurrence of the stop gap in the linear spectra and the nonlinear mechanism on it, which makes switching between transmitting and non-transmitting states achievable.

Influence of higher-order photon absorption on bistable-soliton propagation and switching

Richard H. Enns, S. S. Rangnekar

The effect of weak higher-order photon absorption on bistable-soliton propagation and switching in a fiber whose intensity-dependent refractive index is described by the linear-plus-smooth-step model is investigated numerically. The choice of model allows the application of the adiabatic assumption and a clear analytic interpretation of all of the observed results.

Two-Dimensional Discrete Cavity Solitons: Switching and All-Optical Gates

Keivan Mahmoud Aghdami, Mojtaba Golshani, Reza Kheradmand

Light propagation in a 2-D array of coupled optical cavities with Kerr nonlinearity driven by a plane holding beam is numerically studied. Optical bistability together with its modulational instability (MI) are investigated, and 2-D discrete cavity solitons are simulated. These simulations revealed the switching on/off of the solitons along with the ability of a proper Gaussian beam (GB) to control their positions. Soliton-soliton and soliton-GB interactions are considered, and finally, all-optical NOR , XNOR, and NAND gates are proposed as realized by this device.
