Phase Relations, Quasicontinuous Spectra and Subfemtosecond Pulses in High-Order Stimulated Raman Scattering with Short-Pulse Excitation

Abstract

High-order stimulated Raman scattering for pumping by ps and sub-ps pulses is studied in the frame of a time-domain approach without the slowly varying envelope approximation. Formation of pulse trains with sub-fs durations in the ps-pump regime is demonstrated using external phase compensation. For sub-ps excitation a novel broadening mechanism of Raman lines is predicted that leads to a quasicontinuous spectrum and permits one to generate single sub-fs pulses. We predict also essential shortening of a delayed fs-probe pulse by the Raman oscillations without phase control.

Subfemtosecond pulse generation by cascade-stimulated Raman scattering with modulated Raman excitation

Kun Wu, Jian Wu, Heping Zeng

Subfemtosecond (sub-fs) pulses can be generated by cascade-stimulated Raman scattering in a Raman medium with modulated Raman excitations, driven by two sufficiently intense laser beams, one of which is amplitude modulated. The nonadiabatic Raman interaction establishes a strong modulated Raman coherence, which supports compression of the generated broadband Raman sidebands to a train of sub-fs pulses regardless of whether the carrier frequencies of the driving lasers are tuned above, below or on two-photon Raman resonance.

Generation of Single Dispersion Precompensated 1-fs Pulses by Shaped-Pulse Optimized High-Order Stimulated Raman Scattering

Vladimir P. Kalosha, Michael Spanner, Joachım Herrmann +1 more

We propose and theoretically analyze a new approach for generating and shaping 1-fs pulses. It combines the ideas of strong-field molecular optics and optimal control to manipulate light generation in a pump-probe Raman regime. Flexible phase control over the generated spectrum of about 3 eV width is achieved by controlling the input pulses and maximizing the coherence of medium excitation by adiabatically aligning molecules in the medium with a specially shaped pump pulse. The generated pulse is optimized for an output window, precompensating for its dispersion to all orders.

Behavior of high-order stimulated Raman scattering in a highly transient regime

Emiliano Sali, Paul Kinsler, G.H.C. New +4 more

We have investigated the behavior of high-order stimulated Raman scattering in a highly-transient regime. We demonstrate efficient collinear generation of vibrational sidebands in molecular hydrogen and methane using two-color pumping with pulses of duration $\ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\sim}100\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{fs}$ tuned to a vibrational Raman transition. A Raman spectrum with a large bandwidth was observed, ranging from the IR to the UV. Under some conditions strong pump depletion was observed and up to five anti-Stokes sidebands were observed to have energies exceeding 10% of the transmitted pump pulse energies. A numerical simulation reproduces qualitatively and quantitatively the experimental results and allows us to explain key experimental features. The simulation also confirms that the molecular coherence in the medium is substantially increased by the two-color pumping and allows us to deduce values for the degree of material excitation. The use of this technique looks promising for efficient subfemtosecond pulse generation.

Nonlinear theory of transient stimulated Raman scattering and its application to long-pulse experiments

C. Claude, F. Ginovart, Jérôme J.-P. Leon

The nonlinear theory of stimulated Raman scattering of high-energy long laser pulses in two-level media is constructed and provides a unified global interpretation of the experiments of Dr\"uhl, Wenzel, and Carlsten [Phys. Rev. Lett. 51, 1171 (1983)]. It is proved that the model, resulting from the slowly varying envelope approximation and including phase mismatch and detuning from Raman resonance, is integrable by the spectral transform method for arbitrary boundary values. The essential variable in the theory is the phase of the Stokes pulse relative to the pump. For long duration input pump pulses and when pump and Stokes pulses experience a rapid \ensuremath{\pi} phase shift, an anomalous spike of pump radiation is created in the pump depletion zone. It is shown in particular that the decay of Raman spikes is related to the velocity of this \ensuremath{\pi} phase shift. For fast flips, the possibility of observing spike overflow is established and, with multiple phase flips, a multiple-spike phenomenon is produced, suggesting new experiments. Lastly, the number of optical phonons participating to the interaction is explicitly calculated.

Generation of subfemtosecond pulse by nonadiabatic Raman excitation

Jian Wu, Kun Wu, Heping Zeng

Subfemtosecond pulses can be generated in a Raman generator by using electromagnetically induced transparency if ultrabroad Raman sidebands are generated and then propagate in such a way that the generated sidebands at higher frequencies are temporally advanced with regard to those at lower frequencies. However, it was recently demonstrated by experiments [1] that above-resonance Raman excitations ensured the establishment of anti-phased Raman coherence for pulse compression but only very limited number of Raman sidebands could be generated due to Raman self-defocusing [2], while broadband sidebands could be generated under below-resonance Raman excitations, which supported no pulse compression in the same Raman media. In order to establish anti-phased Raman coherence and simultaneously overcome Raman self-defocusing to benefit efficient generation of broadband sidebands, we suggest in this report a new technique to generate sub-fs pulse train in a Raman generator driven by three sufficiently intense single-mode laser beams whose carrier frequencies are tuned off the Raman resonance with two different two-photon detunings. The Raman interaction establishes a molecular modulation through nonadibatic processes. The simulation on the basis of the fundamental rotational Raman transitions in H2 shows that sub-fs pulse can be generated by above-resonance or below-resonance Raman excitations, or even Raman excitations with opposite detunings, as is shown in Fig.1. This opens a new way for experiments to observe enhanced generation of broadband Raman sidebands, together with compression of the phase-locked Raman sidebands into sub-fs pulse trains in the same Raman media

Generation of subfemtosecond pulses with coherence modulation using high-order stimulated Raman scattering

Jian Wu, Heping Zeng

We suggest that subfemtosecond pulses can be generated by using high-order stimulated Raman scattering when a Raman transition is driven by three intense single-mode laser beams with two different modulation frequencies. An oscillatory strong Raman coherence is established by the modulated molecular modulation. Numeric simulations based on the first fundamental vibrational Raman transition of gaseous and solid deuterium indicate that subfemtosecond pulses can be generated by Raman excitations with above, below, or opposite Raman detunings.
