Energy pooling process in rubidium vapour

Abstract

The 'quasi-resonant' energy pooling process in a rubidium vapour (Rb(5p 2 P 3 2/)+Rb(5p 2 P 3 2/)+68 cm -1 to Rb(5d)+Rb(5s 2 S 1 2/)) is experimentally investigated. An asymptotic theoretical model is applied to this reaction and gives a cross section (1*10 -14 cm 2 ) close to the experimental value (3*10 -14 cm 2 ). The results are discussed together with available data for other alkali atoms.

An experimental study of rubidium energy pooling collisions, Rb(5P(J)) + Rb(5P(J))-->Rb(nlJ') + Rb(5S), at thermal energies, was carried out in a cell. Atoms were excited to either the 5P 1/2 or 5P 3/2 state using a single-mode diode laser. The excited atom density and spatial distribution were mapped by monitoring the absorption of a counter-propagating single-mode diode laser beam, tuned to either 5P 1/2-->5D 3/2 or 5P 3/2-->7S 1/2 transition, which could be translated parallel to the pump beam. The excited atom densities were combined with the measured fluorescence ratios to determine cross sections for the rubidium energy pooling process. For 5P 3/2 excitation the cross sections for nlJ' being 5D 5/2, 5D 3/2, and 7S 1/2 are (1.32+/-0.59) x 10(-14), (1.18+/-0.53) x 10(-14) and (3. 21+/-1. 44) x 10(-15) cm2, respectively. For 5P 1/2 excitation the cross sections for nlJ' being 5D 5/2 and 5D 3/2 are (6.57+/-2.96) x 10(-15), and (5.90+/-2.66) x 10(-15) cm2, respectively. The results were compared with those of other experiments.

Studies of inelastic cross-section in Rb(7S) + Rb(5S) collisions

Luo Caiyan, Aigars Ekers, Janis Klavins +1 more

The cross section σ = (8 ± 4) × 10 −15 cm 2 was determined for the Rb(7S) + Rb(5S) → Rb(5D) + Rb(5S) excitation energy transfer process, and the quenching cross section σ q = (2 ± 1) × 10 −14 cm 2 for the Rb(5D) state in collisions with ground state Rb atoms. Applying rubidium quasimolecular asymptotic potential curves at relatively large internuclear distances, a qualitative interpretation of the experimental results is presented. It is shown that the quenching of the Rb(5D) atoms in collisions may be explained by a reversed energy pooling process Rb(5D) + Rb(5S) → Rb(5P) + Rb(5P).

A study of inelastic collisions Rb(7S) + Rb(5S). Theoretical aspects

V. Grushevsky, Mārtiņš Jansons, K. Orlovsky

The mechanisms of nonresonant excitation transfer process in thermal collisions of two rubidium atoms Rb(7S) + Rb(5S) → Rb(5D) + Rb(5S) was studied theoretically, under conditions when the initial and final states of a system of two colliding atoms are not connected with each other by electric multipole transitions. Population processes of Rb 5D states were considered using calculated adiabatic potential curves of the Rb 2 quasimolecule in asymptotic approximation. The calculated cross-sections (σ theor = 5.0 × 10 −15 cm 2 ) are in good agreement with experimental results [σ exp = (8.0 ± 4.0) × 10 −15 cm 2 ] at thermal collision energies ( T ∼ 500 K).

Resonant Reaction in Rb–Cs Vapour Mixture Rb(5 P 1/2 ) + Cs(6 P 3/2 ) → Cs(8 S 1/2 ) + Rb(5 S 1/2 )

Shen Yi-Fan, Kang Dai, Baoxia Mu +2 more

We experimentally study energy-pooling collision in the Rb–Cs vapour mixture at low densities in a cell. Atoms are excited to Rb(5 P 1/2 ) and Cs(6 P 3/2 ) states using two single-mode diode lasers. To isolate the heteronuclear contribution in the fluorescence spectrum, a double-modulation technique is adopted. The excited-atom density and spatial distribution are mapped by monitoring the absorption of a counterpropagating single-mode diode laser beam, tuned to Rb(5 P 1/2 →7 S 1/2 ) and Cs(6 P 3/2 →8 S 1/2 ) transitions, respectively, which could be translated parallel to the pump beams. The excited atom densities are combined with the measured fluorescence ratios to determine cross section for the energy-pooling process [i.e. Rb(5 P 1/2 ) + Cs (6 P 3/2 ) → Cs(8 S 1/2 ) + Rb (5 S 1/2 )]. The cross section is 3.79×10 −14 cm 2 ±45%.
