Angular momentum and Heisenberg's correspondence principle

Abstract

Heisenberg's form of the correspondence principle is applied to the matrix elements of tensor operators. A correspondence limit of the Wigner-Eckart theorem is obtained. It is shown that the Clebsch-Gordan coefficient tends in this limit to the product of a reduced rotation matrix element with a simple multiplicative factor. A similar, but not identical, expression has long been known as a formal limit obtaining when two of the three angular momenta involved become large. It is characteristic of correspondence principle expressions that the initial and final quantal states must be represented by some 'mean' classical orbit, the choice of which remains ambiguous. Here recursion relations are used to arrive at the optimal choice. In this way, a correspondence principle approximation to the Clebsch-Gordan coefficient is obtained which may be used with success far from the limit to which it nominally refers. This approximation is tested numerically against both exact and semiclassical computations.

Semiclassical integrable matrix elements

James J. Morehead

A semiclassical expression for matrix elements of an arbitrary operator with respect to the eigenstates of an integrable Hamiltonian is derived. This is essentially the Heisenberg correspondence principle, and it is shown via the Weyl correspondence that the approximation is valid through the lowest two orders in \ensuremath{\Elzxh}. The result is used to prove that an asymptotic form of the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for two large and one small angular momenta is valid through two orders. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Clebsch-Gordan Coefficients

Victor Anisimov, James J. P. Stewart

The addition theorem of angular momentum states that the angular momentum operator of a coupled state is the vector sum of the angular momentum operators of the uncoupled states. Given that, the eigenfunction of the angular momentum of a system in the coupled state can be represented as a linear combination of eigenfunctions of the system in its uncoupled state and, in turn, the eigenfunctions of the uncoupled state are a direct product of eigenfunctions of the individual particles. Clebsch-Gordan coefficients emerge as an overlap integral in the series expansion of the coupled state in the basis of uncoupled states. This chapter provides a detailed derivation of the addition theorem of angular momentum, including obtaining the lower and upper boundaries of the quantum numbers, deriving the orthonormality conditions for Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, and using shift operators to generate the members of a multiplet. It also derives a general expression for the evaluation of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, provides a detailed analysis of the addition of angular momenta and electron spin to build the resulting Clebsch-Gordan matrix, and shows that a rotation transformation of the direct product of eigenfunctions of the angular momentum and spin leads to the recurrence relations for the Wigner matrix.

Angular momentum and Heisenberg's correspondence principle. II. More complex matrix elements

S C McFarlane

For pt.I see ibid., vol.25, no.20, p.4045-57 (1992). Previous work on the correspondence principle limit of matrix elements of tensor operators is extended to more complex matrix elements. Limiting forms of several such matrix elements are obtained; each case yields an approximate form for an angular momentum coupling coefficient: two for the 6-j symbol and one for the 9-j symbol. These are similar to existing approximations but are more symmetrical in form and, as a result, more accurate.

Wigner-Eckart Theorem: Separating Geometry from Physics in Tensor Matrix Elements — E8 Intelligence Research

Andrew Stewart Caldin

FINDING: Wigner-Eckart theorem separates geometric (Clebsch-Gordan) from physical (reduced matrix element) content of tensor operator matrix elements in quantum systems. | MATH: \(\langle \alpha', j' m' | T^{(k)}_q | \alpha, j m \rangle = \langle j m; k q | j' m' \rangle \frac{\langle \alpha' j' \| T^{(k)} \| \alpha j \rangle}{\sqrt{2j'+1}}\) where \(\langle j m; k q | j' m' \rangle\) is Clebsch-Gordan coefficient, \(T^{(k)}_q\) is rank-\(k\) spherical tensor operator. | CONNECTION: Clebsch-Gordan coefficients encode \(SO(3)\) symmetry and are directly related to Wigner 3-j symbols, which exhibit symmetries linked to tetrahedral, octahedral, and icosahedral point groups (crystallographic symmetry). The ratio structure of 3-j symbols involves factorials of angular momenta, but no explicit golden ratio constants (0.618, 1.618) appear in the theorem itself. Symmetry Fixes the Ratios, Dynamics Fixes the Scale ── The Three Layers the Wigner-Eckart Theorem Separates: Forced Geometry, Measured Dynamics, Chosen Phase ── [Paper 140]

Yuuki Yamagishi

Symmetry fixes the ratios, dynamics fixes the scale - a census of the Wigner-Eckart theorem. The Wigner-Eckart theorem splits a matrix element of a tensor operator into a Clebsch-Gordan coefficient and a reduced matrix element. This paper writes that this split is not the corpus's split into convention and fact, and that there are in truth three layers, not two. NO NEW MATHEMATICAL THEOREM AND NO NEW PHYSICAL LAW IS CLAIMED. Wigner, Eckart, the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients and the Condon-Shortley phase convention are all standard. The coefficient values were computed here with sympy's Clebsch-Gordan implementation. First, the counting is the whole of the claim. The matrix elements run over three magnetic quantum numbers, so their number is fixed by the dimensions of the multiplets and the rank: twenty-seven when both angular momenta are one and the rank is one, twenty-four for three halves and one half at rank one, forty-five for two and one at rank one, and a hundred and twenty-five for two and two at rank two. The theorem collapses all of them to a single number. Everything else is a Clebsch-Gordan coefficient, a number the group decides. Second, the ratios are fixed with no free parameter. Computing all twenty-seven coefficients for the case where both angular momenta are one and the rank is one, six are nonzero, and each is the square root of two over two with one sign or the other. All are therefore fixed multiples of one another, and not one free parameter enters the ratios. Moreover a selection rule appears that could not have been anticipated. The coefficient with all three magnetic quantum numbers zero vanishes, so within the multiplet of angular momentum one the matrix element joining the two states of zero magnetic quantum number through the zero component of a vector operator is zero. It vanishes although the rule on magnetic quantum numbers is satisfied. Knowing only that rule, this zero cannot be predicted; the theorem gives not only which transitions are allowed but where an allowed one nevertheless vanishes. Third, the selection rules are the theorem's zero set. Listing the coefficients at zero magnetic quantum number for a rank-one tensor operator: from angular momentum zero to zero the coefficient vanishes and the transition is forbidden; from zero to one it is one and allowed; from one to two it is the square root of six over three and allowed; from one to three it vanishes and is forbidden. That a transition from zero to zero is forbidden for a vector operator is exactly the coefficient vanishing there. A selection rule is thus not an extra assumption but the statement about ratios read where the coefficient is zero; the rule and the ratio are one statement read in two places. One caution: from one to one the transition is allowed by the rule on angular momentum, yet the coefficient vanishes at zero magnetic quantum number. The rule about the angular momentum and the rule about the magnetic quantum number are separate statements (Paper 17). Fourth, and this is the core. There are three layers, not two. Multiplying the reduced matrix element by an arbitrary phase makes the individual matrix elements move with that phase while it cancels in every ratio (confirmed here symbolically). So there are three layers: the Clebsch-Gordan coefficient, a forced geometry decided by the group; the size of the reduced matrix element, a dynamics decided by measurement; and its phase and sign, a convention we choose (Condon-Shortley). What matters here is that what Wigner-Eckart separates is not convention from fact. The Clebsch-Gordan coefficient and the reduced matrix element are both facts, one decided by the group and the other by measurement, and the separator is not whether we chose it but what the answer depends on. The convention exists separately, as a third layer, and applying the corpus's dichotomy directly would miss it. Only the ratios reach observation, and the phase disappears there. Paper 112 called the roll on the shape in which a region is allotted and inside it there is freedom, across six distinct roots; here too the frame is allotted and only one number inside is free, though the address differs, there the freedom of states and here the freedom of a coupling strength. Fifth, the theorem gives no magnitude whatever. The reduced matrix element is entirely undetermined by symmetry, and the group says nothing about whether a transition is strong or weak; it says only how the strengths within a multiplet are related. The same shape appears here for a third time. Paper 129 said that the one half comes from mathematics and Planck's constant from physics, and Paper 131 that the natural logarithm of two is a convention while the temperature is physics. Here the ratios come from symmetry and the scale from dynamics. All three are the same shape: the form and the scale arrive from different places. This is not to say the result is light. That the ratios are completely fixed is itself a strong prediction: one measurement determines the whole multiplet, and a measurement departing from the ratios throws the symmetry assumption into doubt. The statement is shaped so as to be refutable. IMPORTANT (scope): a census of established standard material (Layer 2). Every work cited is standard. What is not claimed: any new mathematical theorem (there is none) / any new physical law (there is none) / that the Wigner-Eckart theorem is in error (it is not) / that symmetry is powerless (it is not; fixing every ratio is a strong prediction). What is added: making explicit that the symmetry-dynamics split is not the convention-fact split, counting the phase as a third layer, confirming the invariance of ratios symbolically, and exhibiting a selection rule invisible in advance. What remains: 'symmetry explains the spectrum' is half a sentence. What symmetry explains is the ratios within a multiplet and not the size of any one of them, and in reading a ratio one should check that the third layer, the phase, has cancelled. Only two of the three layers ever reach observation. On the making of this work: The ideas and content of this work stem from the author's own considerations. Reduction of General Matrix Elements in the Seniority Schemeby Using a Novel Relation for CG Coefficients

Masao Nomura

Reduction relations for shell-model matrix elements of general operators in normal products ( e.g. general many-body operators) are investigated in the framework of the seniority scheme of identical particles. A novel relation for Clebsch-Gordan (CG) coefficients is exploited to remove from reduction factors all the CG coefficients that result from Wigner-Eckart theorem in the quasi-spin space. Reduction factors in the final step have very simple dependence on the number of particles.
