Abstract

In this paper recent experiments of our group performed with single atoms in cavities and traps are summarized. In the first part experiments with the one-atom maser are described dealing with the generation of number states of the photon field. In the second part of the paper spectroscopy of a single trapped In + ion is discussed being performed with the aim to realize a new frequency standard in the optical range.

Quantum optics of a single atom

HERBERT WALTHER

In this paper recent experiments performed in our laboratory are reviewed dealing with the investigation of quantum phenomena in the radiation interaction of single atoms. The first part describes experiments in single mode cavities using the one-atom maser or micromaser and in the second part experiments with ion traps are summarized. The latter experiments concentrate on the investigation of resonance fluorescence. In addition new experimental proposals using ultracold atoms in cavities and traps are discussed. In those future experiments the interplay between atomic waves and light waves is important and leads to new phenomena in radiation-atom interaction.

Single atom experiments in cavities and traps

HERBERT WALTHER

In this paper recent experiments with the one-atom maser or micromaser performed by our group will be reviewed, as well as experiments with single ions in traps. The discussion is limited to results relevant in connection with the experimental realization of a quantum computer. The principle of the electrode configuration of the ion trap used for the investigation of the spectrum of resonance fluorescence described in the second part of this paper has also been used to realize a linear trap. This work on resonance fluorescence and the more recent work on ordered structures in a miniature trap being produced recently are the basis for the use of such a set-up for quantum computers.

Laser experiments with single atoms in cavities and traps

HERBERT WALTHER

In this paper recent experiments with the one-atom maser or micromaser are described. They deal with the dynamical behavior of the field at parameter values where the field undergoes phase transitions. In the second part of the paper experiments with a single laser-cooled In+ ion in a modified Paul trap are discussed. The aim of this experiment is precision spectroscopy and cavity quantum electrodynamics on the basis of quantum jumps.

Generation of photon number states on demand

HERBERT WALTHER

Experiments with single atoms have become routine. In this paper two groups of these experiments will be reviewed with special emphasis on applications to study quantum phenomena in the atom-radiation interaction. The first one deals with the one-atom maser and the second one with another cavity quantum electrodynamic device on the basis of trapped ions. The latter device has interesting applications in quantum computing and quantum information.
