Abstract

Discrepancies in BCS theory results for finite Fermi systems with exact values of thermodynamic quantities are eliminated by means of averaging over pairing fluctuations. A form of the averaging function is proposed and its parameters are considered.

A simple derivation of the zero-temperature BCS functional from the reduced BCS Hamiltonian

Christian Hainzl, Riccardo Panza

We consider a grand-canonical reduced BCS Hamiltonian on the full fermionic Fock space with an attractive pairing interaction supported in an energy shell around the Fermi surface. For fixed chemical potential, we prove that the exact finite-volume ground-state energy differs from the minimum of the corresponding finite-volume BCS functional by a volume-independent error. As a consequence, the BCS variational principle is exact for the ground-state energy density in the thermodynamic limit.

Chemical potential beyond the quasiparticle mean field

Nguyen Dinh Dang, Nguyễn Quang Hưng

The effects of quantal and thermal fluctuations beyond the BCS quasiparticle mean field on the chemical potential are studied within a model, which consists of $N$ particles distributed amongst $\ensuremath{\Omega}$ doubly folded equidistant levels interacting via a pairing force with parameter $G$. The results obtained at zero and finite temperatures $T$ within several approaches, which include the fluctuations beyond the BCS theory, are compared with the exact results. The chemical potential, defined as the Lagrangian multiplier to preserve the average number of particles, is compared with the corresponding quantity, which includes the effect from fluctuations of particle and quasiparticle numbers beyond the BCS quasiparticle mean field. The analysis of the results shows that the latter differs significantly from the former as functions of $G$ and $T$. The chemical potential loses its physical meaning in the system with a fixed number of particles or after eliminating quantal fluctuations of particle (quasiparticle) numbers by means of particle number projection. The validity of the criterion for the signature of the transition to Bose-Einstein condensation, which occurs in infinite systems when the chemical potential hits the bottom of the energy spectrum, is reexamined for the finite multilevel model.

Order parameter, correlation functions, and fidelity susceptibility for the BCS model in the thermodynamic limit

Omar El Araby, D. Baeriswyl

The exact ground state of the reduced BCS Hamiltonian is investigated numerically for large system sizes and compared with the BCS ansatz. A ``canonical'' order parameter is found to be equal to the largest eigenvalue of Yang's reduced density matrix in the thermodynamic limit. Moreover, the limiting values of the exact analysis agree with those obtained for the BCS ground state. Exact results for the ground-state energy, level occupations, and a pseudospin-pseudospin correlation function are also found to converge to the BCS values already for relatively small system sizes. However, discrepancies persist for a pair-pair correlation function, for interlevel correlations of occupancies and for the fidelity susceptibility, even for large system sizes where these quantities have visibly converged to well-defined limits. Our results indicate that there exist nonperturbative corrections to the BCS predictions in the thermodynamic limit.
