Squeezed Quantum Fluctuations and Noise Limits in Amplifiers and Attenuators

Claire R Gilson, Stephen Mark Barnett, Stig Stenholm

Conventional amplifiers add quantum noise to a signal. Both amplifiers and attenuators lead to a reduction of the signal-to-noise ratio. We find, however, that devices exhibiting squeezed fluctuations in the gain or loss medium lead to an improved signal-to-noise ratio, in one quadrature of the output, compared to the limits associated with conventional devices. We investigate amplifier and attenuator noise properties using a simple model in which the gain or loss medium is a broad-band reservoir in a specially prepared, or ‘rigged’, state.

The Entanglement Assistant Capacity of Quantum Heat Noise Channel

Xiang-Jun Li

In this paper, we have studied the entanglement assistant capacity of single-mode heat noise channel with limited input power in which classical information is transmitted, and the same problem for those single-mode heat noise channels with amplifying and attenuating effects. For the heat noise channel, we have found that the capacity will be attained when input signal is heat noise and squeezed state is no useful for reaching the capacity. And for those single-mode heat noise channels with amplifying and attenuating effects the same result is obtained.

Low-noise properties of squeezed light in transmission chains formed from nonlinear alternating attenuators and amplifiers

P. García-Fernández, Francisco Javier Bermejo

An idealized model of an optical communication link in which identical sections of nonlinear attenuating fiber alternate with identical amplifiers is considered. Signal-to-noise ratios of chains of these elements for input squeezed and coherent light have been numerically evaluated. It is found that input squeezed light and nonlinear attenuators improve the signal-to-noise ratios with respect to coherent inputs and linear chains. In the case of three-photon attenuators, the noise and signal-to-noise ratio remain practically constant from certain elements of the chain. Moreover, the influence of the attenuation coefficient and the input mean photon number on the signal-to-noise ratios was considered, as well as chains with nonlinear amplifiers and chains in which the amplifier gain does not exactly compensate for the fiber attenuation.
