By employing forces that depend on the internal electronic state (or spin) of an atomic ion, the Coulomb potential energy of a trapped ion crystal can be modified in a spin-dependent way to mimic effective quantum spin Hamiltonians. We use simple models to explain how effective Ising interactions are engineered with trapped-ion crystals. We discuss the range of interactions that can be readily generated and an experimental implementation using single-plane ion crystals in a Penning trap.

Planar Coulomb crystals have been recently proposed for implementing large-scale quantum simulation and computation. We investigate the structure and properties of planar Coulomb crystals in both Penning and rf traps. We also analyze in detail the effects of rf-heating and collisions with background gas and estimate the achievable fidelity of quantum gates. The prospects for the experimental implementation of this quantum computation proposal are discussed.

Designing an ion trap for quantum simulation

I. M. Buluta, Shuichi Hasegawa

Planar Coulomb crystals have been recently proposed for the implementation of quantum simulation and computation. In order to put this idea into practice we designed a specialized RF ion trap system. The design is based on extensive numerical simulations of planar Coulomb crystals in RF traps and the estimation of the error in quantum simulation and computation. Our trap would have reduced heating rates and large axial confinement frequencies would be available. Moreover, it provides very good optical access and it is easy to construct and operate.
