Abstract

An antiferromagnetic classical XY model with the nearest-neighbor interaction 2 J and the next-nearest-neighbor interaction δ J on a one-dimensional lattice is investigated in the low temperature limit. We obtain the asymptotic behaviors at long distances, of the two-spin correlation function for δ>1/2 and of the chirality-chirality correlation function for δ=1. The behavior of the latter correlation function is shown to be similar to the one of the two-spin correlation function for the Ising model with the nearest-neighbor interaction J /2 on a one-dimensional lattice.

Correlation function of one-dimensional s = 1 Ising model

Alexey I. Proshkin, Tatyana Ponomareva, I. A. Menshikh +2 more

The temperature behavior of the Fourier transform of the spin-correlation function has been studied in terms of the one-dimensional Ising model taking into account the interaction between the nearest neighbors in the cases of different signs of exchange interactions, magnetic field, and spin. It has been shown that, in the antiferromagnetic model, in the frustration field, the correlation function has a broad maximum and does not take on the form of a delta function as the temperature approaches zero, which indicates the absence of ordering in the system.

One-Dimensional Isotropic Spin-1/2 Heisenberg Magnet with Ferromagnetic Nearest-Neighbor and Antiferromagnetic Next-Nearest-Neighbor Interactions

Takashi Tonegawa, Isao Harada

We study the ground-state and finite-temperature properties of the one-dimensional isotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnet with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions which compete with each other. Extrapolating the exact results for finite-size systems of up to 20 spins, we estimate the ground-state energy and the ground-state two-spin correlation function in the infinite-size limit. Using the cluster transfer matrix method, we also calculate the temperature dependence of the internal energy and the specific heat and that of the inverse correlation length and the wave number, by both of which the asymptotic behavior of the two-spin correlation function in the long-distance limit is characterized. We compare the results of these calculations with those obtained previously for the case where the nearest-neighbor interaction is antiferromagnetic.

Phase diagrams of two-dimensional frustrated spin systems

Ansgar Kalz

In this work the ordering processes in classical frustrated Ising models and the ground-state behavior of frustrated quantum spin models are investigated. In the first part the phase transition from a high-temperature paramagnetic phase to a antiferromagnetic ground state is analyzed for the square-lattice Ising model with competing antiferromagnetic interactions between nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor spins. In the case of spatially isotropic interactions the phase transition to a collinear state is of special interest. Using Monte-Carlo simulations on finite lattices as well as field-theoretical methods for the continuous model it is shown that depending on the frustration three different sectors can be distinguished that show (i) Ising-universal behavior (ii) Ashkin-Teller-like non-universal behavior (varying critical exponents) and (iii) non-critical first-order behavior. For spatially anisotropic interactions the emergence of an intermediate incommensurate phase is verified by means of Monte-Carlo simulations which has been predicted by earlier mean-field calculations. The nature of this phase is studied analyzing spin-spin correlation functions and its ordering wave-vector reveals a strong temperature and size dependence. In the second part the influence of quantum fluctuations on classical antiferromagnetic ground states are investigated in anisotropic quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg models with competing interactions. Using quantum Monte-Carlo simulations, exact diagonalization and perturbation theory the ground-state phase diagrams are calculated for a square lattice with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions and a honeycomb lattice with up to third-nearest-neighbor interactions whereby the fluctuations are chosen to be non-frustrating. For both cases the stability regions of classical magnetic states are identified and an intermediate phase is detected that shows no sign of long-range magnetic order. Further calculations also rule out valence-bond-crystal or topological order for this state, thus a quantum disordered ground state is stabilized in these models.

Soluble classical spin model with competing interactions

John Stephenson

The partition function and spin pair correlation functions have been calculated exactly for a classical linear chain model with alternate next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) interactions, in which the interaction energies between pairs of nearest (nn) and next-nearest (nnn) neighbor spins are arbitrary functions of the angles between the relevant spins. Of special interest is the cosine interaction model described by the Hamiltonian ℋ=−ΣNi=1[J1(cosϑ2i−1,2i +cosϑ2i,2i+1)+J2cosϑ2i−1,2i+1]. When the nnn interaction is antiferromagnetic (J2<0) it competes with the nn interaction J1, and there can be disorder point(s) at which nnn correlations change from monotonic to oscillatory. The ground state is ferromagnetic when the interaction ratio r≡J2/‖J1‖ ≳−1/2=rc, but is disordered for more negative values. The disorder point locus has been determined. It terminates at zero temperature at rD=−1/21/2, at which point the ground state energy is a maximum. The result that rD differs from rc is thought to be peculiar to one-dimensional models. Over a limited range of values of r there can be two disorder points. The low temperature asymptotic behavior of the partition and correlation functions is analyzed in detail. Also a novel summation formula for spherical Bessel functions is obtained.

Antiferromagnet-ferromagnet transition in the one-dimensional frustrated spin model

V. Ya. Krivnov, А. А. Овчинников

The one-dimensional s=1/2 quantum spin model with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions is considered. The behavior of the system in the vicinity of the transition point from the antiferromagnetic ground state to the ferromagnetic one is studied. The consideration is based on the classical approximation and the regular procedure is proposed to find the corrections to the classical energy. The dependence of the energy on spin S is calculated. We obtain evidence of a phase separation for the state with intermediate S. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Phase transitions and critical properties of the frustrated Heisenberg model on a layer triangular lattice with next-to-nearest-neighbor interactions

Akai Kurbanovich Murtazaev, Рамазанов Магомедшейх Курбанович, V. K. Badiev

The critical behavior of the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor (J) and next-to-nearest-neighbor (J 1) interactions is studied by the replica Monte Carlo method. The first-order phase transition and pseudouniversal critical behavior of this model are established for a small lattice in the interval R = |J 1/J| = 0–0.115. A complete set of the main static magnetic and chiral critical indices is calculated in this interval using the finite-dimensional scaling theory.
