Transformations of Ising Models

Abstract

The "star-triangle" and "decoration" transformations are generalized so as to apply to arbitrary mechanical systems coupled to the spins of a standard Ising net. This leads to exact solutions for further plane Ising nets and also for lattices in which the spins on alternate sites have a magnitude greater than $S=\frac{1}{2}$. A general class of antiferromagnetic Ising models is constructed; exact closed expressions can be derived for all the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of these models in an arbitrary magnetic field. The magnetizations and susceptibilities of Ising nets in which different spins have different magnetic moments are investigated and a valuable relation between the susceptibilities of the honeycomb and triangular lattices is derived. It is shown how correlation functions involving a given spin can be expressed in terms of correlations involving the nearest-neighbor spins instead.

Integrability and non-integrability in the Ising model

Michael Assis

The Ising model at magnetic field H=0 is one of the most important exactly solved models in statistical mechanics, solved on the square lattice in 1944 by Onsager, and later by others on the triangular lattice; its magnetic susceptibility at H=0 continues to be an unsolved aspect of the model, however. The susceptibility can either be viewed as a sum over all correlation functions of the integrable model at H=0, or else as a second derivative of the free energy of the non-integrable Ising model in a field. Therefore, its analytic properties, though derived from the non-integrable model, can be studied through series expansion of the integrable correlation functions. We begin this process by analyzing the first four terms in the form factor expansion of the diagonal correlation functions, and after summing over the diagonal form factor expansion, the first four terms of the diagonal susceptibility expansion. We have been able to reduce the form factor and susceptibility expansion terms, given as multi-dimensional integrals, to closed-form functions in all cases. Under the limit of H going to infinity with the interaction energy E going to minus infinity, the isotropic Ising model becomes a hard particle lattice gas model, with exclusion of nearest neighbor lattice sites. In this limit, the triangular lattice Ising model becomes the exactly solved hard hexagon model, while the square lattice becomes the non-integrable hard squares model. We study in detail these models for finite lattice sizes in order to understand the differences between integrable and non-integrable models. We consider the partition functions zeros and their density for different boundary conditions, and find notable differences in the density which is attributed to an extra factorization in the transfer matrices of hard hexagons which is absent in hard squares. We also study the special point at fugacity z=-1 of hard squares where all eigenvalues of the transfer matrix are equimodular and where the grand partition function's value depends on boundary conditions. | 300 pages

Triplet order parameters in triangular and honeycomb Ising models

Ian Graham Enting

It is shown that the ratios of certain triplet order parameters to magnetisation in honeycomb and diamond lattice Ising models can be easily calculated. Applying the star-triangle transformation reproduces the result obtained by Baxter (see ibid., vol.8, p.1797 (1975)) on the triangular lattice. The new derivation indicates that exact solutions for triplet order parameters are of only limited use as checks on series expansions.

Exact solutions for Ising-model odd-number correlations on planar lattices

Jeremiah H. Barry, T. Tanaka, Mahfuza Khatun +1 more

Simple procedures are first used to obtain exact solutions of highly-localized odd-number Ising correlations on the kagom\'e, square, and honeycomb lattices. To extend these results, a systematic and unifying method is then developed and demonstrated for finding exact solutions of n-site (with n an odd integer) Ising correlations on various planar lattices. The method combines five transformation or mapping theorems and linear-algebraic correlation identities of the triangular Ising model supplemented by a foreknowledge of its spontaneous magnetization and three select triplet correlations. In particular, considering a select seven-site cluster of the triangular Ising model, the knowledge of all its eleven odd-number correlations defined upon this cluster is shown sufficient for determining exactly all honeycomb, decorated-honeycomb, and kagom\'e Ising odd-number correlations upon their correspondingly select 10-, 19-, and 9-site clusters, respectively. The direct applicability of the catenated mapping theorems and relative ease of the calculational procedures are highlighted by the resulting large numbers of multisite correlation solutions (e.g., approximately 80 and 50 for the honeycomb and kagom\'e Ising models, respectively), the large ${\mathit{n}}_{\mathrm{max}}$ values (${\mathit{n}}_{\mathrm{max}}$=9, 9, and 19, respectively, for the honeycomb, kagom\'e, and decorated-honeycomb Ising models), and convenient prescriptions for extracting critical amplitudes. The results also offer examples of correlation degeneracies and other linear-algebraic correlation identities that do not depend explicitly upon the interaction parameters.

Some exact results on the coupled ising chains with general spinS

D. Hajdukovi

The antiferromagnetic Ising model is considered for the critical magnetic field on a lattice which consists of three coupled chains with coordination number γ = 6. The ground-state entropy and magnetization are expressed as explicit functions of the spin S. These exact results are also a very good approximation for the antiferromagnetic model on the triangular lattice.

EXACT BOUNDARY MAGNETIZATION OF THE LAYERED ISING MODEL ON TRIANGULAR AND HONEYCOMB LATTICES

Alessandro Pelizzola

In the present paper we extend a previous exact calculation of the boundary magnetization of the square lattice layered Ising model, based on a transfer-matrix effective-field technique, to the triangular lattice. The result is then further extended to the honeycomb lattice by means of a star-triangle transformation. Finally, the (11) boundary of the square lattice is analyzed as a particular case of the triangular and honeycomb lattices.

399th solution of the Ising model

R. J. Baxter, Ian Graham Enting

The authors show that the nearest-neighbour correlations of the honeycomb, triangular, and square Ising models can be obtained by using only the star-triangle relations and simple assumptions concerning the thermodynamic limit and differentiability. This gives the internal energy, and hence the free energy and specific heat.
