Abstract

It has been experimentally demonstrated that 45 bits of information can be optically recorded and transmitted by one quasi-discrete spectral supercontinuum, formed when two femtosecond pulses with superwide spectra interfere with a time delay between them less than the width of each pulse.

Temporal, spectral, and spatial coherence of optical pulse trains

Rahul Dutta

The work presented in this thesis deals with the coherence of optical pulse trains in time, frequency, and space domains. This thesis, based on the second-order coherence theory of nonstationary light, primarily consists of theoretical investigations which result in useful insights in the coherence characterization of pulsed optical sources.Analytical models that physically represent supercontinuum pulse trains, broadband axicon fields, and slightly disturbed mode-locked pulse trains are proposed.Numerically simulated realizations of supercontinuum pulse trains are also considered in this study. In addition, an experimental setup with corresponding analytical analysis is presented to illustrate the evaluation of the two-time coherence function of pulse trains and it is shown that for that one needs to perform time-resolved measurements of the interference fringes. Moreover, information conveyed by the timeintegrated measurements of the interference fringes produced by supercontinuum light and slightly perturbed mode-locked laser is explained through analytical and numerical investigations. An experimental demonstration of the time-integrated measurements is reported for an almost fully coherent femtosecond pulse train.

Excitation of wave packets

Carlos R. Stroud, J.D. Parker, John A. Yeazell

The large transform bandwidth of a picosecond or subpicosecond laser pulse can simultaneously and coherently excite many electronic states of an atom or molecule. The resulting superposition state has a number of properties very different from those of an ordinary energy eigenstate.

Theoretical investigation of femtosecond-resolved photoelectron spectra of three-level ladder K2 molecules

Feng Xiao-Jing, Guo Wei, Lu Xing-Qiang +2 more

We investigate the effect of delay time, pulse width and pump wavelength on photoelectron spectra and wave packet forming process of the three-level K2 molecules via time-dependent wave packet approach. There is no Autler-Townes splitting for weaker pump intensity or shorter pulse width. Delay time and pump wavelength can affect peak structure, position, and relative height. The vibration period of wave packet does not vary with pump wavelength, while the oscillating amplitude decreases with increasing pulse width. Results may provide important basis for realizing the optical control of molecules experimentally.

Free-space supercontinuum coherence data packets multiplexing and demultiplexing for ultrafast laser communication

Iosif Zeylikovich, R. R. Alfano

The multiplexing and ultrafast multichannel spatially-resolved demultiplexing of supercontinuum (SC) coherence data packets using a coherent time-to-space conversion is proposed as a novel approach for free-space ultrafast laser communication. The femtosecond coherence time of spectrally extended SC pulses is used on the femtosecond time scale without the need for femtosecond pulses. The proposed scheme for data packets coherence multiplexing and demultiplexing is experimentally demonstrated. This SC approach has the capability of processing multigigabits per second information for free-space laser communication applications.
