All-Optical Switching with a Weak Control Signal in a Nonlinear Interferometer

Je‐Myung Jeong

We propose and study all-optical probe switching using a control signal in a nonlinear interferometer configuration. In our proposed device, we can have a power- or a phase-controlled switching function with a control signal that is much weaker than the probe signal. Since the control signal and the probe have the same wavelengths and polarizations, the pulse walk-off associated with the dispersion does not take place, and thus the speed of operation is not limited by dispersion. We have experimentally demonstrated power-controlled switching with a control signal whose power is 10 times weaker than the probe power.

Magnomechanically induced absorption and switching properties in a dispersively coupled magnon-qubit system

Sabur A. Barbhuiya, Aranya B. Bhattacherjee

We theoretically study the non-linear behavior of a hybrid quantum magnomechanical system, where the system consisting of a superconducting qubit couples dispersively to a magnon–phonon mode. The magnetic excitations (magnons) can interact with the mechanical vibrations of the system via a magnomechanical interaction, which results in the formation of magnomechanically induced transparency in the output of the system. We investigate the system’s switching behavior in the dressed qubit anharmonicity of the system and shows the sharp bistable frequency switching of the magnon–excitons. The proposed model also shows a realistic scheme to measure the magnon-qubit dispersive shift in the absorption spectra of the probe field. The absorption spectrum induced by the dispersive coupling shows a series of asymmetric double Fano line shapes whose positions can be determined by the magnon-qubit driving field. Our results will provide a theoretical approach to understand the complex and dynamic non-linear interactions and may come up with great significance in the realization of quantum sensing applications of magnonic systems.

On the dynamic response of nonlinear Fabry-Perot interferometers

J. A. Goldstone, E. Garmire

We develop equations for the dynamic response of the non-linear Fabry-Perot, including a finite material response time. Our model demonstrates overshoot switching for rapid onset signals. This phenomenon makes possible several new effects: switching below steady-state intensity values, output response determined by input onset characteristics, pulse trains transmitted in four distinct modes including alternate switching, and input phase switching up as well as down. Our model also exhibits critical slowing down which occurs, in general, at unstable equilibrium output intensities. Finally, we include coupled nonlinear cavities and analyze a three-mixror configuration which produces pulsed outputs for appropriate CW inputs.
