Study of Oscillations and Correlations in the Relaxation of a Model Spin System

Abstract

A detailed investigation is made of the approach to equilibrium of system of spins with $I=\frac{1}{2}$. The spin-spin interaction ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{k}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{j<k}{B}_{\mathrm{jk}}{{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{x}}^{j}{{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{x}}^{k}$ with ${B}_{\mathrm{jk}}$ constant is treated exactly, while the additional interaction ${\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{k}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{j<k}{L}_{\mathrm{jk}}{{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{x}}^{j}{{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{x}}^{k}$ with ${L}_{\mathrm{jk}}$ depending on lattice vibrations is treated by means of the assumption of sufficiently short correlation times for the ${L}_{\mathrm{jk}}$ operators. All correlations between the ${L}_{\mathrm{jk}}$ are included. The effect of the correlations usually neglected is expressed in terms of a sum over states somewhat resembling an Ising-model partition function with the time replacing interaction strength. The oscillatory relaxation via the ${B}_{\mathrm{jk}}$ and the monotonic relaxation via the phonons compete with each other; interference effects between the two relaxation modes also occur; the origin and nature of the irreversibility are very different for the two relaxation modes.

Approach to Equilibrium

Steve P. Heims

The time-dependent behavior of an isolated system consisting of many spins in a solid lattice is studied. An interaction of the form Bjkσjxσkx is assumed between any pair (j, k) of spins. The system is treated without making any approximations; it is one of the few many-body systems whose time-evolution can be treated exactly. The behavior is fully determined by the initial density matrix and the distribution of values Bjk. By considering a variety of distributions for the Bjk, and a variety of initial density matrices, one finds cases (initial random phasing and particular continuous spectra) where the system relaxes monotonically to a metastable equilibrium; in other cases (coherent initial state or nearest-neighbor coupling only) the system oscillates indefinitely without relaxation; in still other cases (initial random phasing and N → ∞) the system relaxes in an oscillatory way to the metastable equilibrium.

THE LONG TIME ASYMPTOTIC BEHAVIOUR OF THE CORRELATION FUNCTIONS——THE INFLUENCES OF THE WAVES ON THE RELAXATION PROCESSES

HUO YU-PING, 中国科学院等离子体研究所

Based on the general theory of the non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, we have discussed the influences of waves on the relaxation processes in macroscopic systems, especially. about the non-exponential asymptotic behaviour of the correlation functions.Because, how to select the representation is important for discussing the dissipative processes in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, it is desirable to start from the elementary excitation representation. Using the Basic idea of C* algebra theory, we have developed a method for operator expansion, and employed it to express the flow operators in second quantized elementary excitation representation. Taking the residual interaction between the elementary excitations as perturbation in the calculation of the resolvent of the Liouville operator, and using the method of projection operator, a general expression of the non-exponential decaying part of the correlation functions have been obtained.By analysing the procedure of treating the elementary excitation spectrum, we devided the residual interaction into two parts. For pure dissipative mode, taking into account the linear interaction, the main terms of the non-exponential decaying part(t(-d/2) term) were obtained. Detailed analysis shows that, the non-linear interaction (mode-mode coupling) is very small, and leads to a relatively faster decaying process (t(-d) or so), hence it can be neglected. This article emphasizes that, for the wave processes, the local fluctuation correlation, the particle self-correlation and the transport processes are different in nature. Their relative magnitudes (relative to the corresponding quasi-particle parts) may also be quite different. With these general results, we have analysed briefly the relaxation processes in liquid, and made some discussion about the so called mode-mode coupling theory.

Critical properties of two-level atom systems interacting with a radiation field

Giuseppe Di Liberti, Rosa Letizia Zaffino

The thermodynamic properties of $N$ two-level atoms coupled to radiation field are analyzed taking into account the diamagnetic term by a slight modification to the usual approach to quantizing the electromagnetic field. Following this procedure, we are able to solve the discrepancy originating in the use of different states as a basis for expressing the state of radiation field. We develop a perturbative expansion of partition function and a simple analytic expression is found for a high coupling constant. We show that, in this limit, the interaction of independent atomic spins with a single photon mode can be interpreted as an effective spin-spin interaction of long range nature. Even in this approach, if the diamagnetic term is taken into account, a phase transition at nonzero temperature cannot occur due to sum-rule arguments.

I. Exact relations among correlation functions of inherently nondynamic interacting systems

Stephen B. Haley

The standard basis operator (SBO) equation of motion is solved exactly for the class of interacting many-body Hamiltonians which can be constructed from a complete set of mutually orthogonal projection operators. This class includes the Ising model Hamiltonians. Two integration procedures are presented: (1) term by term integration over the poles of the SBO double-time temperature-dependent Green’s functions in the spectral representation; (2) direct integration of the time-dependent equation of motion of an SBO. An ensemble average expression relating correlation functions among systems in different energy states is derived. For the Ising model this expression relates correlation functions of spin clusters of different orders, and it is analogous to a relation derived from the master equation under equilibrium conditions.
