Phase-coherent multilevel two-photon transitions in cold Rb atoms: Ultrahigh-resolution spectroscopy via frequency-stabilized femtosecond laser

Tai Hyun Yoon, Adela Marian, J. L. Hall +1 more

A two-photon transition in cold Rb atoms will be probed with a phase-coherent wide bandwidth femtosecond laser comb. Frequency domain analysis yields a high-resolution picture where phase coherence among various transition pathways through different intermediate states produces interference effects on the resonantly enhanced transition probability. This result is supported by the time domain Ramsey interference effect. The two-photon transition spectrum is analyzed in terms of the pulse repetition rate and carrier frequency offset, leading to a cold-atom-based frequency stabilization scheme for both degrees of freedom of the femtosecond laser.

Stable spin domains in a nondegenerate ultracold gas

Sean Graham, Dorna Niroomand, Robert J. Ragan +1 more

We study the stability of two-domain spin structures in an ultracold gas of magnetically trapped $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms above quantum degeneracy. Adding a small effective magnetic field gradient stabilizes the domains via coherent collective spin rotation effects, despite negligibly perturbing the potential energy relative to the thermal energy. We demonstrate that domain stabilization is accomplished through decoupling the dynamics of longitudinal magnetization, which remains in time-independent domains, from transverse magnetization, which undergoes a purely transverse spin wave trapped within the domain wall. We explore the effect of temperature and density on the steady-state domains, and compare our results to a hydrodynamic solution to a quantum Boltzmann equation.

Population of Stark wave-packet states by cw laser excitation

Jonathan Baugh, W. P. Garver, Charles E. Burkhardt +1 more

Using a unique method, we create coherent states in an atom by periodically (\ensuremath{\sim}100--200 MHz) applying a low-amplitude, \ensuremath{\sim}5-V/cm, ns electric-field pulse that drives the atoms to a realm where many stationary states lie within a very narrow energy range. Using a cw laser we excite a coherent superposition of these coherent states and probe the attributes of such a state in the frequency domain (rather than in the time domain). We show that such coherent superpositions exhibit localized electronic probability densities and, therefore, qualify as wave packets.
