Abstract

A closed four-level system in atomic vapor is proposed, which is made to possess left handedness by means of the technique of quantum coherence. The method of density matrix is utilized in view of the rotatingwave approximation and the effect of local-field in dense gas.The result of the numerical simulation shows that the negative permittivity and negative permeability of the medium can be achieved simultaneously (i.e., the left handedness) in a wider frequency band under appropriate parameter conditions.Furthermore, when analyzing the dispersion property of the left-handed material, we find that the probe beam can be controlled to change from superluminal to subluminal or vice versa via changing the detuning of the probe field.

Electromagnetically Induced Left Handedness in Y-type Four Level Atomic System

Zhang Zhen-qinga, Zhao Shun-caia

The quantum system with an interaction between a closed Y-type four-level atom and multi-mode light fields is adopted to possess left handedness by means of the technique of quantum coherence. In the representation of interaction, the density matrix method is utilized in view of the rotating-wave approximation and the di-pole approximation. The conclusion of the numerical simulation shows that under the appropriate parameter conditions, the medium can achieve negative permittivity and negative permeability simultaneously (i.e. the left handedness effect happens and the left-handed material is realized.) In the condition of the weak probe field, when the Rabi frequency of probe light increases, the frequency range of the medium to achieve its left-handed effect decreases and the refractive index and absorption coefficient will also changed correspondingly. The medium to affect light absorption and gain in the conditions of the establishment of left -handed effect are also discussed. The paper can be concluded that, in the conditions of weak probe field, the electro-magnetic induction can be used to achieve the left-handed effect of the medium, which extends the implementation of left-handed materials in the experiment, and extends the application field of electro-magnetic induction.

We propose a scheme for realizing negative refractive index in a four-level atomic system. It is shown that such a system can simultaneously exhibit negative permittivity and negative permeability in an optical frequency range. Furthermore, by analysing the dispersion property of the left-handed material, we find that the probe beam can be controlled from superluminal to subluminal or vice versa via choosing appropriate parameters.

Electromagnetically Induced Left-Handedness in a Dense Atomic Vapor Medium

Li Qiang Wang, Xiang-an Yan

We discuss how a three-level system can be used to change the frequency-dependent magnetic permeability of a dense atomic gas to be significantly different from 1. The results show that a negative permittivity and permeability simultaneously with transparent propagation of the electric part of the probe filed can be obtained. Moreover, the magnetic part of the probe field can be amplified instead of strong absorption as usual materials. Therefore, it may be possible to obtain left-handed electrodynamics for an atomic gas using three atomic levels.

Left handness in a four-level atomic system

Shuncai Zhao, Zhengdong Liu

A scheme is proposed for realizing simultaneous negative permittivity and negative permeability based on quantum coherence in a four-level dense atomic system here.Under some parametric conditions the system shows that simultaneous negative permittivity and negative permeability(i.e.Left handness) can be achieved in a wider frequency band because of quantum coherence. And the novelty properties of gain and dispersion near the resonance frequency may have some potential applications.
