Abstract

We describe the observation of a sharp leading-edge spike in a biphoton wave packet that is produced using slow light and measured by two-photon correlation. Using the stationary-phase approximation we characterize this spike as a Sommerfeld-Brillouin precursor resulting from the interference of low- and high-frequency spectral components.

Direct Observation of Optical Precursors in a Region of Anomalous Dispersion

Heejeong Jeong, Andrew M. C. Dawes, Daniel J. Gauthier

We create optical precursors by propagating a step-modulated optical pulse through a linear resonant dielectric absorber. The field emerging from the dielectric consists of a several-nanosecond-long spike with near 100% transmission, which decays to a constant value expected from Beer's law. This high-transmission spike might be useful for imaging applications requiring penetrating optical radiation. We compare our observations to two different theories, revealing that the spike consists of both the Sommerfeld and Brillouin precursors.

Subnatural Linewidth Biphotons with Controllable Temporal Length

Shengwang Du, Pavel Kolchin, Chinmay Belthangady +2 more

This Letter describes the generation of biphotons with a temporal length that can be varied over the range of 50-900 ns, with an estimated subnatural linewidth as small as 0.75 MHz. We make use of electromagnetically induced transparency and slow light in a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap with an optical depth as high as 62. We report a sharp leading edge spike that is a Sommerfeld-Brillouin precursor, as observed at the biphoton level.

Optical precursors in transparent media

B. Macke, Bernard Ségard

We theoretically study the linear propagation of a stepwise pulse through a dilute dispersive medium when the frequency of the optical carrier coincides with the center of a natural or electromagnetically induced transparency window of the medium (slow-light systems). We obtain fully analytical expressions of the entirety of the step response and show that, for parameters representative of real experiments, Sommerfeld-Brillouin precursors, main field and second precursors (``postcursors'') can be distinctly observed, all with amplitudes comparable to that of the incident step. This behavior strongly contrasts with that of the systems generally considered up to now.

Observation of Optical Precursors with Electromagnetically Induced Transparency

We generate Sommerfeld-Brillouin precursors from a square-modulated laser pulse through a cold atomic ensemble with electromagnetically induced transparency. At a high optical depth, the precursor forerunner is clearly separated from the delayed main pulse.

Optical Precursors with Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in Cold Atoms

Dong Wei, J. F. Chen, M. M. T. Loy +2 more

We report the observation of Sommerfeld-Brillouin optical precursors generated from a long square-modulated laser pulse propagating through a cold atomic ensemble with electromagnetically induced transparency. The optical depth (alpha(0)L) of the medium can be varied from 0 up to 50. We demonstrated that the step-on rising and step-off falling edges propagate with the speed of light in vacuum without a slow light effect. At high alpha(0)L, the precursor is separated from the delayed main pulse at the rising edge, while at the falling edge, we observe damped oscillatory structures resulting from the interference between the precursor and main field.
