Abstract

The random Ising model in a transverse field in one dimension with Hamiltonian H=- Sigma ( Gamma i S i z +J i S i x S i+1 x ) is studied at T=O from a real-space renormalisation group block method which preserves duality transformations. The ground state magnetisation and the ground state energy are determined for random distributions P(J)(P( Gamma ))=N J J NJ-1 /J 0 N(J) for 0<J<J 0 and P(J)=0 for J>J O . A new critical behaviour corresponding to a new fixed point takes place in the presence of disorder. The crossover exponent describing the departure from the pure system behaviour is calculated. The second derivative of the ground state energy delta 2 E/ delta Gamma 2 which diverges logarithmically for the pure system is rounded in the presence of disorder but a sharp transition field still exists where the magnetisation goes to zero with an exponent beta about twice as large as the pure system exponent. Comparison is made with the analytical results of McCoy and Wu (1969) for the classical equivalent random-striped Ising 2D model.

Zero-temperature renormalisation group study of the random systems: the Ising model in a transverse field in two dimensions

G. Kamieniarz

A zero-temperature real space renormalisation group block method is applied to the random quantum Ising model with a transverse field on the planar honeycomb and square lattices. For the bound diluted system the magnetisation and the separation of the ground-state energy level (in the paramagnetic phase) are presented for several bond concentrations p. The critical exponents extracted both from the fixed points and from direct numerical computations preserve some scaling relations, and the critical curve displays a characteristic discontinuity at the percolation concentration. For the McCoy and Wu distribution (1968) the random fields and bonds are found to introduce a strong relevant disorder. The order parameter still falls off continuously to zero for well defined values of the parameters but a new fixed point yields a slight change in the critical exponents.

Random transverse and longitudinal field Ising chains

Tamás Pető, Ferenc Iglói, István A. Kovács

Abstract Motivated by experimental results on compounds like LiHo x Y 1 − x F 4 , we consider an Ising chain with random bonds in the simultaneous presence of random transverse and longitudinal fields. We study the low-energy properties of the model at zero temperature by the strong disorder renormalisation group method. In the absence of random longitudinal fields, the model showcases a trivial quantum-ordered and quantum-disordered fixed-point and a non-trivial infinite disorder critical point. In the absence of random transverse fields, the behaviour is dictated by the classical random-field Ising fixed-point. In the simultaneous presence of both a longitudinal and transverse random field, the RG trajectories are attracted to a set of disordered fixed-points, in which the disorder is either due to random quantum fluctuations, or due to classical random-field effects. Between the two regimes there is a smooth cross-over, which becomes sharp at the infinite disorder fixed-point. This local separatrix defines the relevant scaling direction, where the correlation-length is shown to diverge with an exponent ν h ≈ 1 .

Equation of state and quantum crossover in the transverse Ising model

K. Lukierska‐Walasek

The equation of state of the transverse Ising model in a longitudinal field B is investigated in the vicinity of the zero-temperature multicritical point by using the renormalisation group method recently proposed by the author and K. Walasek (1983). For the critical value of transverse field the scaling crossover form of the relation between the longitudinal magnetic field and magnetisation M is obtained as B approximately M delta q Psi (z) with z approximately TM - phi beta q/, where phi , delta q and beta q denote the crossover and multicritical exponents. The crossover scaling function Psi (z) is calculated for the spatial dimensions d<or=3 and 3<d<4 to the first order in epsilon '=3-d and epsilon =4-d, respectively.

The one-dimensional Ising model with a random transverse field at T=O from a real space renormalisation group method

The one-dimensional Ising model in a random transverse field (taking the values Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 with probabilities p and 1-p) is studied at T=0 from a real-space renormalisation group method. The phase diagram f Gamma 1 , Gamma 2 , p) is obtained and agrees with exact results.

Critical behavior of random transverse-field Ising spin chains

Daniel S. Fisher

A real-space renormalization-group treatment of random transverse-field Ising spin chains that was introduced previously is developed and extensively analyzed. It yields results that are asymptotically exact in the critical region near the zero-temperature para-to-ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. In particular, the exact scaling function is obtained for the magnetization as a function of a uniform applied magnetic field and the distance to the critical point, and up to the solution of a linear ordinary differential equation whose solution can be exhaustively analyzed, the scaling function of the average spin-spin correlation function is also obtained. Thus more exact information is obtainable about the critical behavior for this random model than is known for the pure version which is equivalent to the two-dimensional Ising model. The basic reason for this is the extremely broad distribution of energy scales that occurs at low energies near the critical point of the random system. For the random chain the distribution of the magnetization of the first spin in a semi-infinite system is also studied and the results found to agree in the scaling limit with results of McCoy obtained from the exact solution of the closely related McCoy-Wu Ising model; this provides strong justification for the validity of the present approach. The singular properties of the weakly ordered and weakly disordered ``Griffiths' phases'' that occur at zero temperature near the critical point are also studied, as well as the behavior at low but nonzero temperature. Possible extensions of the results and general lessons drawn from them for other random systems are briefly discussed.

Triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model with a transverse field at zero temperature

K. A. Penson, Rémi Jullien, Pierre M. Pfeuty

The ground-state properties of the triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model with Ising constant J in a transverse field h are investigated by a real-space renormalisation group method. For h=0, the known properties (energy=-J, finite entropy, no order) are recovered. For h not=0, the ground state remains highly degenerate, no order exists and the correlation function exhibits power-law behaviour up to (h/J)c approximately=1.41, where a phase transition takes place to a non-degenerate ground state. At h/J=(h/J)c, power-law behaviour is still observed for the correlation function but with a different exponent. Just above this region a gap Delta opens ( Delta approximately ((h/J)-(h/J)c)s with s=0.8) and the coherence length of the correlation function xi diverges as xi varies as ((h/J)-(h/J)c)-v with v=0.8. This corresponds to a three-dimensional classical model where h is replaced by the temperature. In this type of system, where the ground state has a degeneracy proportional to N2/3 it is predicted that a transition will occur at a finite T c to a low-temperature phase without order but with power-law behaviour for the correlation function, as for the classical XY model in two dimensions.
