Crossover Behavior of Magnetic Excitations in the Anisotropic Haldane Antiferromagnet under High Magnetic Fields

Abstract

Field-induced magnetic phases are investigated in the one-dimensional S = 1 Haldane system with the easy-plane anisotropy under external magnetic fields along an arbitrary direction, using the density-matrix renormalization group method. At a critical field the system exhibits the quantum phase transition from the nonmagnetic Haldane phase to a magnetic phase. It is found that the quantum analog of the classical soliton bearing system is induced except for the case where the field is applied perpendicular to the easy plane. In the exceptional case, Tomonaga-Luttiger spin-fluid state is realized. The angle dependence of the critical field is discussed in connection with two consecutive field-induced phase transitions observed in NDMAP. Possible implications for such novel transitions are given.

Spin-Reorientation Transition of Field-Induced Magnetic Ordering Phases in the Anisotropic Haldane System

Hiroshi Miyazaki, Tomohiko Hiwasa, Masataka Oko +1 more

A possible spin-reorientation transition in field-induced magnetic ordering phases of the S=1 Haldane system with large easy-plane anisotropy is proposed, using an effective Lagrangian formalism as well as the density matrix renormalization group method. Such a spin-reorientation transition is predicted in the case where the applied magnetic field is inclined from the easy axis of the anisotropy. We point out that this transition has a close connection with a variation of the order parameter even at zero temperature, although it is different from a quantum analog of the so-called spin-flop transition proposed for the system having a strong easy axis anisotropy. In connection with a novel phase observed recently in the Haldane system at high fields, we discuss possible implications for the field-induced magnetic ordering.

Magnetic Phases and Long-Range Ordering of the Haldane System in High Magnetic Fields

Isao Harada, Yoshihiro Nishiyama

Critical properties of field-induced magnetic phases are investigated in the one-dimensional S=1 Haldane system with planar anisotropy, using the finite-temperature density-matrix renormalization group method. We point out that the underlying physics of the properties differs significantly between cases of different field directions: The magnetic phase is characterized as the gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger regime in one case and as the gapful soliton regime in the other. In connection with the information obtained for the one-dimensional spin chain, possible implications for the field-induced magnetic long-range ordering are discussed.

Field‐induced nematic phase in the spin ladder system with easy‐axis anisotropy

Tôru Sakai, Takashi Tonegawa, Kiyomi Okamoto

Abstract The spin ladder system with the easy‐axis anisotropy in magnetic field is theoretically investigated using the numerically exact diagonalization, the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and the finite‐size scaling analysis. It is found that the field‐induced nematic phase appears above the critical field. In addition, there exists another critical field at which the quantum phase transition from the nematic phase to the conventional field‐induced Tomonaga–Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase occurs. The phase diagram on the coupling anisotropy versus magnetization plane is given by the numerical diagonalization. Furthermore, a typical magnetization curve calculated by the DMRG is presented.

Field-induced spin nematic Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid of the S=12 spin ladder system with anisotropic ferromagnetic rung interaction

Tôru Sakai, Ryosuke Nakanishi, Takaharu Yamada +5 more

The $S=\frac{1}{2}$ quantum spin ladder system with the anisotropic ferromagnetic exchange interaction on the rung under magnetic field is investigated using the numerical diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) analyses. It is found that the nematic-spin-correlation-dominant Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) appears in some high magnetic field. It is included in the TLL phase where the two-magnon bound state is realized. For some suitable parameters, after the field-induced phase transition from this two-magnon-bound TLL phase to the single-magnon TLL one, the re-entrant transition to the two-magnon-bound TLL phase occurs, which is confirmed by the magnetization curves by the DMRG. Several phase diagrams on the plane of the coupling anisotropy versus the magnetization and the magnetic field are presented. The present result is a proposal of the candidate system which exhibits the spin nematic phase without the biquadratic interaction or the frustration.

Phase diagram of theXXZferrimagnetic spin-(1/2, 1) chain in the presence of transverse magnetic field

A. Langari, J Abouie, M Z Asadzadeh +1 more

We investigate the phase diagram of an anisotropic ferrimagnetic spin-(1/2, 1) in the presence of a non-commuting (transverse) magnetic field. We find a magnetization plateau for the isotropic case while there is no plateau for the anisotropic ferrimagnet. The magnetization plateau can appear only when the Hamiltonian has the U (1) symmetry in the presence of the magnetic field. The anisotropic model is driven by the magnetic field from the Néel phase for low fields to the spin-flop phase for intermediate fields and then to the paramagnetic phase for high fields. We find the quantum critical points and their dependence on the anisotropy of the aforementioned field-induced quantum phase transitions. The spin-flop phase corresponds to the spontaneous breaking of Z 2 symmetry. We use the numerical density matrix renormalization group and analytic spin wave theory to find the phase diagram of the model. The energy gap, sublattice magnetization and total magnetization parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field are also calculated. The elementary excitation spectra are obtained via the spin wave theory in the three different regimes depending on the strength of the magnetic field.

Field-driven quantum phase transitions in a spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an extended Lieb lattice

Dávid Sivý, Jozef Strečka

The magnetic behavior of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the extended Lieb lattice is examined in the presence of an external magnetic field. Using density matrix renormalization group calculations, we determine the zero-temperature magnetization curves and construct the ground-state phase diagram in the magnetic field vs. the interaction ratio plane. Depending on the interaction ratio, the zero-temperature magnetization curves exhibit field-driven quantum phase transitions between the gapped phases manifested as the intermediate plateaus at $1/5$ and $3/5$ of the saturation magnetization and a gapless spin-canted phase, in which the magnetization varies continuously with the applied magnetic field. Quantum Monte Carlo simulations reveal clear finite-temperatures signatures of the field-induced quantum phase transitions and the intermediate magnetization plateaus, while they provide no evidence for either continuous or discontinuous thermal phase transitions.
