Power Series Expansion of Propagator for Path Integral and Its Applications

Abstract

In this paper we obtain a propagator of path integral for a harmonic oscillator and a driven harmonic oscillator by using the power series expansion. It is shown that our result for the harmonic oscillator is more exact than the previous one obtained with other approximation methods. By using the same method, we obtain a propagator of path integral for the driven harmonic oscillator, which does not have any exact expansion. The more exact propagators may improve the path integral results for these systems.

Studying Path Intergration Short-time Propgator of the Periodic Damp Harmonic Oscillator by Power Series Expansion Method

Xian-Ting Liang

In this paper we investigate the short-time propagator of the periodic damp harmonic oscillator by using Schwinger method and power series expansion technique which developed by Makri and her colleagues. It is found that the short-time propagators obtained by using the above two methods are nearly equal, but using power series expansion technique is much easier than Schwinger method.

On the quantum mechanical propagator for driven coupled harmonic oscillators

ALVARO DE SOUZA DUTRA

The exact propagator beyond and at caustics for a pair of coupled and driven oscillators with different frequencies and masses is calculated using the path-integral approach. The exact wavefunctions and energies are also presented. Finally the propagator is re-calculated through an alternative method, using the zeta -function.

Path integral for the quantum harmonic oscillator using elementary methods

Scott M. Cohen

We present a purely analytical method to calculate the propagator for the quantum harmonic oscillator using Feynman’s path integral. Though the details of the calculation are involved, the general approach uses only matrix diagonalization and well-known integrals, techniques which an advanced undergraduate should understand. The full propagator, including both the prefactor and the classical action, is obtained from a single calculation which involves the exact diagonalization of the discretized action for the system.

Power Series Expansion for the Time Evolution Operator with a Harmonic-Oscillator Reference System

Alexander N. Drozdov

A simple framework for accurate solution of a general class of one-dimensional Fokker-Planck and/or Schr\"odinger equations is presented. The main idea is representing the propagator in the form $P(x, t|{x}_{0})={P}_{0}(x, t|{x}_{0})\mathrm{exp}[W(x, t|{x}_{0})]$ and expanding the exponent $W$ in a power series in a given function of $t$, where ${P}_{0}$ is the exact solution of a reference harmonic-oscillator problem. The expansion coefficients are analytically evaluated from recursive relations. This approach is shown to be a dramatic improvement over the standard Taylor series expansion for the propagator in that just a few terms of the present expansion are sufficient to attain a very accurate description in the whole time domain.

Schwinger Method and Feynman Path Integral for a Harmonic Oscillator with Mass Growing with Time

Surarit Pepore, Bodinchat Sukbot

The exact propagator for a harmonic oscillator with mass growing like m(1+ατ )2 where m and α are constants and τ is time, is derived by the Schwinger method and the Feynman path integral. In the Schwinger formalism, the propagator can be calculated by basic operator algebra and elementary integrations. In the Feynman path integral method, it can be shown that such a propagator can be evaluated from that for a classical action with the application of a Pauli-Van Vleck formula.

A simple framework for accurate solution of a general class of one-dimensional Fokker-Planck and/or Schr\"odinger equations is presented. The main idea is representing the propagator in the form P(x,t∣x0)=P0(x,t∣x0)exp[W(x,t∣x0)]P(x, t|{x}_{0})={P}_{0}(x, t|{x}_{0})\mathrm{exp}[W(x, t|{x}_{0})]P(x,t∣x0)=P0(x,t∣x0)exp[W(x,t∣x0)] and expanding the exponent WWW in a power series in a given function of ttt, where P0{P}_{0}P0 is the exact solution of a reference harmonic-oscillator problem. The expansion coefficients are analytically evaluated from recursive relations. This approach is shown to be a dramatic improvement over the standard Taylor series expansion for the propagator in that just a few terms of the present expansion are sufficient to attain a very accurate description in the whole time domain.
