Abstract

A reply to the comments of Ghassib and Chester1 on bound and Efimov states of 4He dimers2 and Trimers is presented. It is contended that Bose−Einstein condensation may not be a condition for the appearance of superfluidity in HeII. (AIP).

A critique is presented of a recent comment by March in which he argues that the Bose–Einstein condensate may not exist in HeII. It is concluded that such a dramatic statement is not warrranted in the light of current evidence.

Comment on ‘‘The weakest bond: Experimental observation of helium dimer’’ [J. Chem. Phys. 9 8, 3564 (1993)]

Recently, Luo et al. reported indirect evidence for the formation of dimers in a supersonic expansion of helium. They interpreted their data as confirmation of the existence of a bound state of 4He–4He with a binding energy of order 1 mK. We show that their data are actually consistent with the formation of helium trimers and not dimers. The two control experiments that they performed do not provide any evidence for discarding this alternative hypothesis.

In this Comment we show that the recent suggestion that many published calculations of the groundstate energy of the 4He trimer might be wrong is not substantiated.
