Abstract

We describe measurements of the interspecies trap-loss-rate parameter ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{\mathrm{NaRb}}$ in a magneto-optical trap containing both Na and Rb atoms. Our results reveal the presence of interspecies heteronuclear hyperfine-changing collisions.

Hyperfine-changing collision measurements in trap loss for mixed species in a magneto-optical trap

Moises S. Santos, P. Nussenzveig, Andrea Antunes +2 more

Trap-loss rates due to hyperfine--structure-changing collisions involving cold Na and K atoms in a mixed species magneto-optical trap have been measured. The investigations were performed in the low intensity regime, where hyperfine--structure-changing collision are believed to be the dominant mechanism for atomic losses. Comparison between homonuclear (Na-Na) and heteronuclear (Na-K) collision rate coefficients reveals a higher loss rate in the case of heteronuclear collisions. Results obtained in the regime of low trap laser intensity are compared with existent loss rates for several alkali metals, showing themselves to be in good agreement with those expected.

Trap loss in a two-species Na-Cs magneto-optical trap: Intramultiplet mixing in heteronuclear ultracold collisions

James P. Shaffer, Witek Chalupczak, N. P. Bigelow

We describe a comprehensive investigation of trap loss in a two-species Na-Cs magneto-optical trap. Observed losses, due to the interspecies interactions, are attributed to collisions in which a change in the fine-structure state of the Na partner causes the escape of atoms from the trap. Results are described in terms of the heteronuclear pair potentials and the interaction of the colliding pairs with the radiatively active environment.

Investigation of cold collision in a Rb–Cs magneto-optical trap

Zhonghua Ji, Jizhou Wu, Hongshan Zhang +6 more

We have measured the interspecies trap loss rate coefficient βRb-Cs between ultracold Rb and Cs atoms as a function of Rb trapping laser intensity. The trap loss rate coefficient decreases as the Rb trapping laser intensity increases where the trap loss caused by hyperfine-state changing collision is suppressed due to the increasing Rb trap depth. The experimental results agree with the calculated critical intensity IC of Rb trapping laser by a simple Doppler model.

Isotopic difference in the heteronuclear loss rate in a two-species surface trap

M. E. Holmes, M. Tscherneck, Pedro Antonio Quinto-Su +1 more

We have realized a two-species mirror-magneto-optical trap containing a mixture of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}(^{85}\mathrm{Rb})$ and $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ atoms. Using this trap, we have measured the heteronuclear collisional loss rate ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{\mathrm{Rb-Cs}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ due to intraspecies cold collisions. We find a distinct difference in the magnitude and intensity dependence of ${\ensuremath{\beta}}_{\text{Rb-Cs}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ for the two isotopes $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ and $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ which we attribute to the different ground-state hyperfine splitting energies of the two isotopes.

Trap-loss collisions of 85 Rb and 87 Rb : Dependence on trap parameters

S. D. Gensemer, V. Sánchez-Villicaña, K. Y. N. Tan +2 more

We report on measurements of trap-loss collisions between ultracold Rb atoms that are confined in a magneto-optical trap. Both isotopes, ${}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ and ${}^{87}\mathrm{Rb},$ have been studied over a wide range of trap laser intensities and detunings. The trap-loss collisional rate constant exhibits variations over three orders of magnitude. At low intensities and/or large detunings, the trap loss is dominated by ground-state hyperfine-changing collisions, while at high intensities and small detunings, collisions involving excited atoms are more important. We see significant differences between the isotopes in both regimes. At large detunings, the ability of the trap to recapture products of a hyperfine-changing collision is significantly diminished. This finding is supported by our numerical simulations of the recapture process. The trap loss rates due to collisions with room-temperature background gas have also been measured. A surprisingly large increase in this rate is seen when the confining power of the trap is reduced.

Collisional losses in a K-Rb cold mixture

Luís Gustavo Marcassa, Gustavo Deczka Telles, Sérgio Ricardo Muniz +1 more

We have observed a heteronuclear trap loss rate for a mixture of trapped ${}^{39}\mathrm{K}$ and ${}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms. Our results indicate that hyperfine changing collision and radiative escape dominate in the low and high intensity regimes, respectively. They are also consistent with radiative escape taking place with the participation of the doubly excited state potential $({\mathrm{K}}^{*}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{Rb}}^{*}).$ A Gallagher-Pritchard model taking into account the doubly excited channel was implemented, reproducing the experimental results well qualitatively. The values obtained for the cross species trap loss indicate possibilities of future experiments with this mixture.
