Topological Defects and the Superfluid Transition of the s=1 Spinor Condensate in Two Dimensions

Subroto Mukerjee, Cenke Xu, Joel E. Moore

The s=1 spinor Bose condensate at zero temperature supports ferromagnetic and polar phases that combine magnetic and superfluid ordering. We analyze the topological defects of the polar condensate, correcting previous studies, and show that the polar condensate in two dimensions is unstable at any finite temperature; instead, there is a nematic or paired superfluid phase with algebraic order in exp(2itheta), where theta is the superfluid phase, and no magnetic order. The Kosterlitz-Thouless transition out of this phase is driven by unbinding of half-vortices (the spin-disordered version of the combined spin and phase defects found by Zhou), and the anomalous universal 8T(c)/pi stiffness jump at the transition is confirmed in numerical simulations. The anomalous stiffness jump is a clear experimental signature of this phase and the corresponding phase transition.

Phase transition of S=12 two-leg Heisenberg spin ladder systems with a four-spin interaction

Keigo Hijii, K. Nomura

We study a phase transition and critical properties of the quantum spin ladder system with a four-spin interaction. We determine a phase boundary between a rung singlet and a staggered dimer phases numerically. This phase transition is of a second order in the weak-coupling region. We confirm that this universality class is described by the $k=2$ SU(2) Wess-Zumino-Witten model, analyzing the central charge and scaling dimensions. In the strong-coupling region, phase transition becomes of a first order.

Universal Scaling Behavior at the Upper Critical Dimension of Nonequilibrium Continuous Phase Transitions

S. Lübeck, P. C. Heger

In this work we analyze the universal scaling functions and the critical exponents at the upper critical dimension of a continuous phase transition. The consideration of the universal scaling behavior yields a decisive check of the value of the upper critical dimension. We apply our method to a nonequilibrium continuous phase transition. By focusing on the equation of state of the phase transition it is easy to extend our analysis to all equilibrium and nonequilibrium phase transitions observed numerically or experimentally.
