The canonical Kravchuk basis for discrete quantum mechanics

Abstract

The well known Kravchuk formalism of the harmonic oscillator obtained from the direct discretization method is shown to be a new way of formulating discrete quantum phase space. It is shown that the Kravchuk oscillator Hamiltonian has a well defined unitary canonical partner which we identify with the quantum phase of the Kravchuk oscillator. The generalized discrete Wigner function formalism based on the action and angle variables is applied to the Kravchuk oscillator and its continuous limit is examined.

Linear canonical transformations and quantum phase: a unified canonical and algebraic approach

Tugrul Hakioglu

The algebra of generalized linear quantum canonical transformations is examined in the prespective of Schwinger's unitary-canonical basis. Formulation of the quantum phase problem within the theory of quantum canonical transformations and in particular with the generalized quantum action-angle phase space formalism is established and it is shown that the conceptual foundation of the quantum phase problem lies within the algebraic properties of the quantum canonical transformations in the quantum phase space. The representations of the Wigner function in the generalized action-angle unitary operator pair for certain Hamiltonian systems with the dynamical symmetry are examined. This generalized canonical formalism is applied to the quantum harmonic oscillator to examine the properties of the unitary quantum phase operator as well as the action-angle Wigner function.

The action-angle Wigner function: a discrete, finite and algebraic phase space formalism

Tugrul Hakioglu, E Tepedelenlioglu

The action-angle representation in quantum mechanics is conceptually quite different from its classical counterpart and motivates a canonical discretization of the phase space. In this work, a discrete and finite-dimensional phase space formalism, in which the phase space variables are discrete and the time is continuous, is developed and the fundamental properties of the discrete Weyl-Wigner-Moyal quantization are derived. The action-angle Wigner function is shown to exist in the semi-discrete limit of this quantization scheme. A comparison with other formalisms which are not explicitly based on canonical discretization is made. Fundamental properties that an action-angle phase space distribution respects are derived. The dynamical properties of the action-angle Wigner function are analysed for discrete and finite-dimensional model Hamiltonians. The limit of the discrete and finite-dimensional formalism including a discrete analogue of the Gaussian wavefunction spread, viz. the binomial wavepacket, is examined and shown by examples that standard (continuum) quantum mechanical results can be obtained as the dimension of the discrete phase space is extended to infinity.

Kravchuk oscillator revisited

Mesuma K. Atakishiyeva, Natig M. Atakishiyev, Kurt Bernardo Wolf

The study of irreducible representations of Lie algebras and groups has traditionally considered their action on functions of a continuous manifold (e.g. the 'rotation' Lie algebra so(3) on functions on the sphere). Here we argue that functions of a discrete variable -Kravchuk functions- are on equal footing for that study in the case of so (3). They lead to a discrete quantum model of the harmonic oscillator, and offer a corresponding set of special function relations. The technique is applicable to other special function families of a discrete variable, which stem from low-dimensional Lie algebras and are stationary solutions for the corresponding discrete quantum models.

A Wigner distribution function for finite oscillator systems

J Van der Jeugt

We define a Wigner distribution function for a one-dimensional finite quantum system, in which the position and momentum operators have a finite (multiplicity-free) spectrum. The distribution function is thus defined on discrete phase-space, i.e. on a finite discrete square grid. These discrete Wigner functions possess a number of properties similar to the Wigner function for a continuous quantum system such as the quantum harmonic oscillator. As an example, we consider the so-called oscillator model in dimension 2 j + 1, which is known to tend to the canonical oscillator when j tends to infinity. In particular, we compare plots of our discrete Wigner functions for the oscillator with the well known plots of Wigner functions for the canonical quantum oscillator. This comparison supports our approach to discrete Wigner functions.

Algebraic discrete quantum harmonic oscillator with dynamic resolution scaling

Michael Q. May, Hong Qin

Abstract We develop an algebraic formulation for the discrete quantum harmonic oscillator (DQHO) from the Hamiltonian for two, coupled QHOs and provide a physical picture for the Kravchuk function eigenstates of the oscillator. The familiar su ( 2 ) structure of the coupled QHO Hamiltonian divides its spectrum into sets corresponding to the DQHO at different resolutions. In addition to energy ladder operators, the formulation allows for the introduction of resolution ladder operators connecting all DQHOs with different resolutions, thus enabling the dynamic scaling of the resolution of finite degree-of-freedom quantum simulations. The coherent state of the DQHO is constructed, and its expected position is proven to oscillate as a classical harmonic oscillator. The DQHO coherent state recovers that of the quantum harmonic oscillator at large resolution.
