Abstract

We investigate the energy spectrum of ultracold fermionic atoms on the two-dimensional optical lattice with symmetry, when an effective magnetic field, which can be realized with laser beams, is perpendicular to the systems. The energy spectrum featured by their fractal band structures is obtained by numerically solving the generalized Harper's equations. The feasibility of detecting the fractal energy spectrum is discussed.

Light-Induced Hofstadter's Butterfly Spectrum of Ultracold Atoms on the Two-Dimensional Kagomé Lattice

Jing-Min Hou

We investigate the energy spectrum of ultracold atoms on the two-dimensional Kagomé optical lattice under an effective magnetic field, which can be realized with laser beams. We derive the generalized Harper's equations from the Schrödinger equation. The energy spectrum with a fractal band structure is obtained by numerically solving the generalized Harper's equations. We analyze the properties of the Hofstadter's butterfly spectrum and discuss its observability.

Light-Induced Hofstadter's Butterfly Spectrum in Optical Lattices

Jing-Min Hou

We propose a scheme to create an effective magnetic field, which can be perceived by cold neutral atoms in a two-dimensional optical lattice, with a laser field with a space-dependent phase and a conventional laser field acting on Λ-type three-level atoms. When the dimensionless parameter α, being the ratio of flux through a lattice cell to one flux quantum, is rational, the energy spectrum shows a fractal band structure, which is so-called Hofstadter's butterfly.

Energy bands and Landau levels of ultracold fermions in the bilayer honeycomb optical lattice

Jing-Min Hou

We investigate the spectrum and eigenstates of ultracold fermionic atoms in the bilayer honeycomb optical lattice. In the low energy approximation the dispersion relation has parabolic form and the quasiparticles are chiral. In the presence of the effective magnetic field, which is created for the system with optical means, the energy spectrum shows an unconventional Landau level structure. Furthermore, the experimental detection of the spectrum is proposed with the Bragg scattering techniques.

We experimentally realized the Harper Hamiltonian with charge neutral, ultracold atoms in optical lattices using laser-assisted tunneling and a potential energy gradient. The energy spectrum of this Hamiltonian is the fractal Hofstadter butterfly.

Unconventional Landau Levels of Ultracold Fermionic Atoms on Two-Dimensional Honeycomb Lattice

Jing-Min Hou

We investigate the unconventional Landau levels of ultracold fermionic atoms on the two-dimensional honeycomb optical lattice subjected to an effective magnetic field, which is created with optical means. In the presence of the effective magnetic field, the energy spectrum of the unconventional Landau levels is calculated. Furthermore, we propose to detect the unconventional Landau levels with Bragg scattering techniques.
