Exact mean-field Hamiltonian for fermionic lattice models in high dimensions

Abstract

We show that even for fermionic lattice models with on-site interaction a mean-field Hamiltonian can be constructed, which--in analogy with spin-lattice models--becomes exact in the limit of high spatial dimensions d. Here the mean fields are fermion operators, rather than numbers. We use this method to obtain the exact solution of a simplified Hubbard model on a Bethe lattice for all temperatures. The order parameter is found to have the conventional mean-field form, but exhibits unusually rich behavior as a function of the interaction.

EXACT MEAN FIELD THEORY FOR CORRELATED LATTICE FERMIONS IN HIGH DIMENSIONS

P. G. J. van Dongen

We review the recently introduced concept of exact mean-field theories for fermionic lattice models. The method is applied to the Extended Simplified Hubbard Model, which is an Extended Hubbard model (including nearest-neighbor interaction) where only the ↓-electrons can hop. The construction of an exact mean-field Hamiltonian is discussed and a summary is given of the results obtained for the critical temperature, the order parameter and the density of states.

Exact mean-field theory of the extended simplified Hubbard model

P. G. J. van Dongen

The recently introduced concept of exact mean-field theories is applied to the extended simplified Hubbard model, which is a one-band extended Hubbard model (including nearest-neighbor interaction) where only the \ensuremath{\downarrow} electrons can hop. An exact mean-field Hamiltonian is derived for the model on a Bethe lattice in the limit of a large coordination number (Z\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}). The mean-field Hamiltonian is used to calculate the Green functions and the free energy at half-filling. This exact solution is analyzed analytically at small and large values of the on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) interaction strengths. One finds that a phase transition occurs at sufficiently low temperatures for all U,V>0. The low-temperature phase is a charge-density wave for V>1/2U and a spin-density wave for V1/2U. Special attention is paid to (i) the critical temperature as a function of U and V, (ii) the order parameter as a function of temperature, and (iii) the density of states. The density of states shows that the low-temperature phase is an insulator for all U,V provided that V/U\ensuremath{\ne}1/2, while the high-temperature phase is a paramagnetic metal for all V if U2, and a paramagnetic insulator if U>2. Many detailed results are given.

Exact solution of the Bose-Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice

Guilhem Semerjian, Marco Tarzia, Francesco Zamponi

The exact solution of a quantum Bethe lattice model in the thermodynamic limit amounts to solve a functional self-consistent equation. In this paper we obtain this equation for the Bose-Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice, under two equivalent forms. The first one, based on a coherent-state path integral, leads in the large connectivity limit to the mean-field treatment of Fisher et al. [Phys. Rev. B 40, 546 (1989)] at the leading order, and to the bosonic dynamical mean field theory as a first correction, as recently derived by Byczuk and Vollhardt [Phys. Rev. B 77, 235106 (2008)]. We obtain an alternative form of the equation using the occupation number representation, which can be easily solved with an arbitrary numerical precision, for any finite connectivity. We thus compute the transition line between the superfluid and Mott insulator phases of the model, along with thermodynamic observables and the space and imaginary-time dependence of correlation functions. The finite connectivity of the Bethe lattice induces a richer physical content with respect to its infinitely connected counterpart: a notion of distance between sites of the lattice is preserved, and the bosons are still weakly mobile in the Mott insulator phase. The Bethe lattice construction can be viewed as an approximation to the finite-dimensional version of the model. We show indeed a quantitatively reasonable agreement between our predictions and the results of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations in two and three dimensions.

Renormalized linked-cluster expansion for strongly correlated lattice fermions ind=∞ dimensions

M. Bartkowiak, K. A. Chao

We show that mean-field-type symmetry-breaking approximations for correlated fermions can be constructed by performing vertex renormalization (VR) in the linked-cluster expansion, just as for the case of lattice spin models. In the limit of infinite spatial dimensions we sum up exactly the renormalized diagrams for the grand-canonical potential of the Hubbard model and, using the diagrammatic technique for Hubbard operators, we construct explicitly an approximate VR. The procedure leads to a self-consistent symmetry breaking analogous to that of the mean-field theory for spin systems. We present solutions for the case of half-filled energy band. They are valid for arbitrary temperatures and become exact for both large-U limit and for U=0. The antiferromagnetic order parameter is found to have the conventional mean-field form and, in the regime of strong correlations, the obtained critical temperature coincides with the mean-field-theory result for the N\'eel temperature of the effective Heisenberg Hamiltonian.

Exact solution of the extended Hubbard model in the atomic limit on the Bethe Lattice

Ferdinando Mancini, Francesco Paolo Mancini, Adele Naddeo

We study the phase diagram at finite temperature of a system of Fermi particles on the sites of the Bethe lattice with coordination number z and interacting through onsite U and nearest-neighbor V interactions. This is a physical realization of the extended Hubbard model in the atomic limit. By using the equations of motion method, we exactly solve the model. For an attractive intersite potential, we find, at half filling, a phase transition towards a broken particle-hole symmetry state. The critical temperature, as a function of the relevant parameters, has a re-entrant behavior as already observed in the equivalent spin-1 Ising model on the Bethe lattice.

Exact solution of the one-dimensional fermion system on a lattice

V. I. Inozemtsev, A. L. Kuzemsky

We investigate the problem of constructing solvable models of nonrelativistic spin-1/2 interacting fermions on an infinite lattice. The extended Hubbard model, which includes the direct and exchange intersite interaction, is considered. The hopping term in the Hamiltonian is not restricted to nearest-neighbor sites (the ``overjumping'' model), but the short-range character of the standard Hubbard model is retained. The solutions in one- and two-particle sectors are obtained in an explicit form by using the theory of Weierstrass elliptic functions. The possibilities of further development of models of that type are also considered.
