Interpretation of the near-threshold behavior of cross sections for e−CO2 scattering

Publisher

Abstract

Converged coupled-channel calculations of $e\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{CO}}_{2}$ scattering have been carried out at very low scattering energies. The results are used to show that a virtual state is present in the model static-exchange-polarization $e\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{CO}}_{2}$ interaction potential used in these calculations. This result provides a possible interpretation for experimental data on total, momentum-transfer, and vibrational-excitation cross sections. A scattering length of $\ensuremath{-}6.17{a}_{0}$ is predicted.

Effect of polarization on photodetachment thresholds

J. Sandström, G. Haeffler, Igor Yu. Kiyan +5 more

We have measured the near-threshold cross sections for the photodetachment of ${\mathrm{Li}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ into the ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}(ks,d)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Li}(2{p}_{1∕2})$, ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}(ks,d)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Li}(3p)$, ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}(kp)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Li}(3s)$, and ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}(kp)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Li}(4s)$ continuum channels and the photodetachment of ${\mathrm{K}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ into the ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}(ks,d)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{K}(4{p}_{3∕2})$ continuum channel. The data was analyzed using both a top-of-barrier model and a modified effective range theory. Both approaches explicitly take into account the significant polarization potential in the final continuum channels. The study involving both experiment and theory enabled us to investigate the effect of the polarization on near-threshold photodetachment. Furthermore, since photodetachment and electron scattering are related in the half-collision concept, we were able to determine low-energy electron scattering quantities such as phase shifts, elastic cross sections, and $s$ wave scattering lengths for electron scattering on excited Li and K atoms. The results allowed us to predict a virtual state in the ${e}^{\ensuremath{-}}(ks)\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Li}(3p)$ system.

Very low-energy total cross sections and the experimental scattering length for the positron–xenon system

Antonio Zecca A, Luca Chiari, Emanuele Trainotti +1 more

We report total cross-section (TCS) results for low-energy positron scattering from the noble gas xenon. A comparison with previous measurements shows a good level of accord with the recent results of the ANU group (2011 New J. Phys. 13 125004). Very good qualitative agreement is also found with the convergent close-coupling (CCC) calculation of Fursa and Bray (2012 New J. Phys. 14 035002) over most of the common energies. By using the shape of the CCC results as a guide, we also extrapolate our measured cross sections to very low energy. With the aid of the CCC theory, we therefore derive the first experimental estimate for the positron–xenon scattering length of a = −99.2 ± 18.4 au. This value is found to be consistent with the CCC-based estimate and also with those of some other theories. This result supports the existence of a positron–xenon virtual state at a positron energy ε = (1.4 ± 0.6) × 10 −3 eV.

Virtual states in electron-molecule scattering via modified effective-range theory

Kamil Fedus, Grzegorz P. Karwasz

The numerical approach to calculating the $S$-matrix poles associated with virtual states in electron-molecule collisions is proposed within the modified effective-range theory frame. The $S$-matrix continuation into the complex momentum plane is possible thanks to the analytical properties of modified Mathieu functions, that is, the exact solutions of the Schr\"odinger equation with the long-range polarization potential ($\ensuremath{\sim}{r}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$). The short-range electron-molecule interaction is included in the introduced numerical approach by model comparison with experimental integral, differential, and momentum-transfer elastic cross sections. The influence of the polarization potential on the virtual-state pole positions is analyzed for nonpolar targets such as ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}, {\mathrm{CH}}_{4}, {\mathrm{CO}}_{2}$, and ${\mathrm{SF}}_{6}$. The relation between the $S$-matrix pole position and the $s$-wave scattering length is discussed.

Ramsauer-Townsend effect for electron scattering from gaseous CF4 molecules

Franco Antonio Gianturco, K. Willner

Quantum scattering calculations are carried out down to very low energy for collisions of electrons with ${\mathrm{CF}}_{4}$ molecules in the gas phase. The interaction forces are obtained from ab initio data for the static interaction and through model potentials for the exchange and correlation-polarization effects. A numerical analysis is performed to evaluate the partial wave convergence behavior over the whole energy range, to assess the reliability of modified effective range theory close to zero energy, and to extract the value and the sign of the scattering length. A comparison with experiments and earlier calculations in the low-energy domain is also presented.

Interaction potentials and ultracold scattering cross sections for the Li+7–Li7 ion-atom system

Amrendra Pandey, M. Niranjan, N. Joshi +3 more

We calculate the isotope-independent ${\mathrm{Li}}^{+}$-Li potential energy curves for the electronic ground and first excited states. The scattering phase shifts and total scattering cross section for the $^{7}\mathrm{Li}^{+}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ collision are calculated, with an emphasis on the ultralow-energy domain down to the $s$-wave regime. The effect of physically motivated alterations on the calculated potential energy curves is used to determine the bound of accuracy of the low-energy scattering parameters for the ion-atom system. It is found that the scattering length for the $A{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{u}^{+}$ state, ${a}_{u}=1325{a}_{0}$, is positive and has well-constrained bounds. For the $X{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{2}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}}_{g}^{+}$ state, the scattering length, ${a}_{g}=20\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}465{a}_{0}$, has a large magnitude, as it is sensitive to the restrained change of the potential, due to the presence of a vibrational state in the vicinity of the dissociation limit.

Strong isotope effect in ultracold collision of N2+ ( ν=1 , j=0 ) with He: A case study of virtual-state scattering

Thierry Stoecklin, A. Voronin

A comparative study of the vibrational deactivation of $^{14}\mathrm{N}_{2}^{+}$ ($\ensuremath{\nu}=1$, $j=0$) in collision with $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ and $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ atoms is investigated. Close-coupling calculations are carried out in the ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}--2000\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ kinetic energy range. At very low kinetic energy, it is found that the cross sections for the collision involving $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ is strongly enhanced by the presence of a virtual state associated with the van der Waals well. The change of mass from $^{3}\mathrm{He}$ to $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ also erases a strong shape resonance at $5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ supported by the van der Waals well. As a result, the law of variation of the associated vibrational quenching rate coefficient is found to be very different for these two systems. This behavior is further analyzed by drawing the real part of the scattering length as a function of the variable mass of a fictitious He atom. Two zero energy resonances are identified for a mass of, respectively, about 3.18 and 3.85 atomic mass units.
