Quantum Brownian particle and memory effects

Abstract

The quantum Brownian particle, immersed in a heat bath, is described by a statistical operator whose evolution is ruled by a generalized master equation (GME). The heat bath's degrees of freedom are considered to be either white-noise or colored-noise correlated, while the GME is considered under either the Markov or non-Markov approaches. The comparisons between these considerations are fully developed, and their physical meaning is discussed.

Correlation in the Langevin theory of Brownian motion

X. L. Li, G. W. Ford, Robert F. O’Connell

In a paper with the same title as the above, Manoliu and Kittel calculated the high temperature ensemble average of the nonequal time product of the displacement and random force in the classical Brownian motion problem. Here, using a generalized quantum Langevin equation (GLE), we generalize these considerations to the quantum case and to the case of an arbitrary heat bath (such as, e.g., the blackbody radiation heat bath). Also, we consider an arbitrary temperature and we generalize beyond Brownian motion to the case of a harmonically bound particle in a heat bath. In addition, we point out that correlations of the type considered are widely used in many applications in a variety of different areas of physics and we review some recent applications of the GLE.

Quantum Brownian motion in a general environment. II. Nonlinear coupling and perturbative approach

B. L. Hu, Juan Pablo Paz, Yuhong Zhang

We develop a perturbation scheme to treat the dynamics of a quantum Brownian particle (coordinate $x$) coupled nonlinearly to a bath of oscillators (coordinates ${q}_{n}$) with an interaction action in the form $\ensuremath{\lambda}f(x){q}_{n}^{k}$. We derive the influence functionals for the $k=2, 3, 4$ cases to order ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}^{2}$ and derive the master equations for the special cases of local dissipation and white noise, as well as the general cases of nonlocal dissipation and colored noise for $f(x)=x \mathrm{and} {x}^{2}$. We show that a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation exists between the $l\mathrm{th}$-order noise kernels of the $k\mathrm{th}$-order coupling and their corresponding dissipation kernels.

Dynamics of a Quantum System Interacting with White Non-Gaussian Baths: Poisson Noise Master Equation

Ken Funo, Akihito Ishizaki

Quantum systems are unavoidably open to their surrounding degrees of freedom. The theory of open quantum systems is thus crucial to understanding the fluctuations, dissipation, and decoherence of a quantum system of interest. Typically, the bath is modeled as an ensemble of harmonic oscillators, which yields Gaussian statistics of the bath influence on the quantum systems. However, there are also phenomena in which the bath consists of two-state systems, spins, or anharmonic oscillators; therefore, the non-Gaussian properties of the bath become important. Nevertheless, a theoretical framework to describe quantum systems under the influence of such non-Gaussian baths is not well established. Here, we develop a theory to describe quantum dissipative systems affected by Poisson noise properties of the bath, because the Lévi-Itô decomposition theorem asserts that Poisson noise is fundamental in describing arbitrary white noise beyond Gaussian properties. We introduce a quantum bath model that allows for the consistent description of dissipative quantum systems. The obtained master equation reveals non-Gaussian bath effects in the white noise regime, and provides an essential step toward describing open quantum dynamics under the influence of generic baths.

Non-Markovian quantum Brownian motion: a non-Hamiltonian approach

A. O. Bolivar

We generalize the classical theory of Brownian motion so as to reckon with non-Markovian effects on both Klein-Kramers and Smoluchowski equations. For a free particle and a harmonic oscillator, it is shown that such non-Markovian effects account for the differentiability of the Brownian trajectories as well as the breakdown of the energy equipartition of statistical mechanics at short times in some physical situations. This non-Markovian approach is also extended to look at anomalous diffusion. Next, we bring in the dynamical-quantization method for investigating open quantum systems, which does consist in quantizing the classical Brownian motion starting directly from our non-Markovian Klein-Kramers and Smoluchowski equations, without alluding to any model Hamiltonian. Accordingly, quantizing our non-Markovian Klein-Kramers in phase space gives rise to a non-Markovian quantum master equation in configuration space, whereas quantizing our non-Markovian Smoluchowski equation in configuration space leads to a non-Markovian quantum Smoluchowski equation in phase space. In addition, it is worth noticing that non-Markovian quantum Brownian motion takes place in presence of a generic environment (e.g. a non-thermal quantum fluid). As far as the special case of a heat bath comprising of quantum harmonic oscillators is concerned, a non-Markovian Caldeira-Leggett master equation and a thermal quantum Smoluchowski equation are derived and extended to bosonic and fermionic heat baths valid for all temperatures.

Quantum Brownian motion with inhomogeneous damping and diffusion

Pietro Massignan, Aniello Lampo, Jan Wehr +1 more

We analyze the microscopic model of quantum Brownian motion, describing a Brownian particle interacting with a bosonic bath through a coupling which is linear in the creation and annihilation operators of the bath, but may be a nonlinear function of the position of the particle. Physically, this corresponds to a configuration in which damping and diffusion are spatially inhomogeneous. We derive systematically the quantum master equation for the Brownian particle in the Born-Markov approximation and we discuss the appearance of additional terms, for various polynomials forms of the coupling. We discuss the cases of linear and quadratic coupling in great detail and we derive, using Wigner function techniques, the stationary solutions of the master equation for a Brownian particle in a harmonic trapping potential. We predict quite generally Gaussian stationary states, and we compute the aspect ratio and the spread of the distributions. In particular, we find that these solutions may be squeezed (superlocalized) with respect to the position of the Brownian particle. We analyze various restrictions to the validity of our theory posed by non-Markovian effects and by the Heisenberg principle. We further study the dynamical stability of the system, by applying a Gaussian approximation to the time-dependent Wigner function, and we compute the decoherence rates of coherent quantum superpositions in position space. Finally, we propose a possible experimental realization of the physics discussed here, by considering an impurity particle embedded in a degenerate quantum gas.

External-noise-driven bath and the generalized semiclassical Kramers theory

Pradipta Ghosh, Anindita Shit, Sudip Chattopadhyay +1 more

We address the issue of a system that has been tacitly made thermodynamically open by externally driving the associated heat bath in an attempt to gain better insight regarding many physical situations that are akin to this problem. This work embodies the study of the quantum effects in the rate of decay from a metastable state of a Brownian particle which is in contact with a correlated noise-driven bath. We do this by initiating from a suitable system-reservoir model to derive the operator-valued Langevin equation. This further leads us to the corresponding c-number analog that includes quantum effects in leading order. Suitable mathematical treatment culminates in the quantum Fokker-Planck equation, the solution to which yields the rate expression. Finally, we put this to thorough numerical analysis.
