Coherent state statistics from time-resolved photon counting

Harish Ravi, Anil Prabhakar

Time resolved photon counting was used to separate the different photon states emitted from a strongly attenuated laser source. We first describe a method to quantify the efficiency of our gated avalanche photo-detector, by relying on known Poissonian statistics. The detector was then optimized under different temperature and bias voltage conditions using the noise equivalent power as a metric. Finally, coherent pulses are sent into a ring cavity, such that the tapped output from the cavity forms a series of time multiplexed pulses, which then yield the photon counting statistics. We observed good agreement between theoretical estimates and experimental observations, to as low as 0.01% probability of detection.

A squeezed-state primer

Richard W. Henry, Sharon C. Glotzer

Using only elementary quantum-mechanical concepts, the statistical properties of various harmonic oscillator states that are linear superpositions of its energy eigenfunctions are described. These superpositions include coherent states and squeezed (or two-photon coherent) states. The resulting Gaussian, minimum-uncertainty wave packets are shown to oscillate back and forth for both coherent and squeezed states, but with an oscillating ‘‘width’’ for the squeezed states. Also examined are the principles underlying the production of squeezed electromagnetic waves via parametric amplification or four-wave mixing, their measurement by homodyne detection, and the connection between squeezing and non-Poissonian counting statistics.

High-fidelity spatially resolved multiphoton counting for quantum imaging applications

Radosław Chrapkiewicz, Wojciech Wasilewski, Konrad Banaszek

We present a method for spatially resolved multiphoton counting based on an intensified camera with the retrieval of multimode photon statistics fully accounting for nonlinearities in the detection process. The scheme relies on one-time quantum tomographic calibration of the detector. Faithful, high-fidelity reconstruction of single- and two-mode statistics of multiphoton states is demonstrated for coherent states and their statistical mixtures. The results consistently exhibit classical values of the Mandel parameter and the noise reduction factor in contrast to raw statistics of camera photo-events. Detector operation is reliable for illumination levels up to the average of one detected photon per an event area-substantially higher than in previous approaches to characterize quantum statistical properties of light with spatial resolution.
