Symmetry properties of the boson-fermion model

Abstract

It is shown for the boson-fermion Hamiltonian that through a suitable pseudospin operator one can construct many eigenstates possessing off-diagonal long-range order. It is also shown that among these states in the symmetric limit of the model there is a state in which the system is a supersolid, i.e., off-diagonal long-range order and charge-density wave coexist.

Quantum phase transitions of interacting bosons and the supersolid phase

Anne van Otterlo, Karl-Heinz Wagenblast, R. Baltin +3 more

We investigate the properties of strongly interacting bosons in two dimensions at zero temperature using mean-field theory, a variational ansatz for the ground-state wave function, and Monte Carlo methods. With on-site and short-range interactions a rich phase diagram is obtained. Apart from the homogeneous superfluid and Mott-insulating phases, inhomogeneous charge-density wave phases appear, that are stabilized by the finite-range interaction. Furthermore, our analysis demonstrates the existence of a supersolid phase, in which both long-range order (related to the charge-density wave) and off-diagonal long-range order coexist. We also obtain the critical exponents for the various phase transitions.

Pseudospin SU(2)-symmetry breaking, charge-density waves and superconductivity in the Hubbard model

Shun-Qing Shen, Xin Xie

In this paper, we discuss the physical consequences of pseudospin SU(2)-symmetry breaking in a negative-U Hubbard model at half-filling. If pseudospin symmetry is spontaneously broken while its unique subgroup U(1) remains invariant, this will lead to a charge-density-wave (CDW) ground state. Furthermore, if the U(1) symmetry is also broken, the ground state will have off-diagonal long-range order, signalling a superconductor. In this case, CDW and superconductivity coexist and form a supersolid. Finally, we show that CDW suppress, but do not destroy superconductivity.

Supersolid in a one-dimensional model of hard-core bosons

Tapan Mishra, Ramesh V. Pai, Subroto Mukerjee

We study a system of hard-core boson on a one-dimensional lattice with frustrated next-nearest-neighbor hopping and nearest-neighbor interaction. At half filling, for equal magnitude of nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor hopping, the ground state of this system exhibits a first-order phase transition from a bond-ordered solid to a charge-density-wave solid as a function of the nearest-neighbor interaction. Moving away from half filling we investigate the system at incommensurate densities, where we find a supersolid phase which has concurrent off-diagonal long-range order and density-wave order which is unusual in a system of hard-core bosons in one dimension. Using the finite-size density-matrix renormalization group method, we obtain the complete phase diagram for this model.

A rigorous theorem on off-diagonal long-range order of boson systems

Guang-Shan Tian

For a strongly interacting boson system, it has been proposed that the concept of off-diagonal long-range ordering (ODLRO) is equivalent to Bose-Einstein condensation for a free boson system. Therefore, the existence of ODLRO in the ground state implies superfluidity. The author checks the validity of this proposition from another point of view. He rigorously shows that, for a hard-core lattice-boson system with a short-ranged interaction ODLRO is suppressed when a charged excitation gap develops and, hence, the boson system becomes a Mott-insulator. Finally, by using his theorem, he shows some interesting properties of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, which can be taken as a hard-core lattice-boson system.

SO(4) Symmetry and Off-Diagonal Long-Range Order in the Hubbard Bilayer

Shi Yu

Yang's η pairing operator is generalized to explore off-diagonal long-range order in the Hubbard bilayer with an arbitrary chemical potential. With this operator and a constraint condition on annihilation and creation operators, we construct explicitly eigenstates which possess simultaneously three kinds of off-diagonal long-range order, i.e., the intralayer one and the interlayer one for on-site pairing, and that for interlayer nearest-neighbor pairing. As in the simple Hubbard model there is also an SO(4) symmetry, with the generators properly defined. A sufficient condition leads to at least one of the above three kinds of off-diagonal long-range order. A constraint relation among different kinds of off-diagonal long-range order is also given. There exists a triplet of collective modes if the U(1) symmetry of a subgroup is spontaneously broken.

Supersolids of Hard Core - Bosons on a Triangular Lattice

Nguyen Toan Thang, Phạm Thị Thanh Ngà

We study the boson model on a triangular lattice interacting only via on-site hardcore repulsion by mapping to a system of spins $(S = 1/2)$. We investigate the supersolid phase of the systems which is a state matter displaying both diagonal long- range (solid) order as well as off-diagonal long-range (superfluidity) by utilizing a semionic representation for the spin-XXZ model. We show that the supersolid order is stable in the mean-field theory for a broad region of parameters. The inclusion of spin wave corrections modifies this picture, but the supersolid phase is still quite robust on the triangular lattices.
