TWO-DIMENSIONAL ISING MODEL IN ANNEALED RANDOM FIELDS

Abstract

The critical behaviour of the two-dimensional Ising model in annealed random fields is studied. Two different kinds of random field are considered and exact results obtained for the transition temperature when the field distribution is symmetric. In the first case the random field is unrestricted and the explicit results obtained for discrete and gaussian field distributions show the annealed field favours the ordering of the system. In the second case the random field satisfies a constraint and explicit results are also obtained for discrete and gaussian field distributions. In the discrete distribution the field assumes the values ±h0,0 and it is shown that there is a critical field hc such that for h0>hc the system presents a reentrant phase transition. In this case the ferromagnetic ground state becomes unstable and there is the appearance of a superantiferromagnetic phase. For h0<hc the ferromagnetic state is stable and the transition temperature decreases due to the presence of the random field.

Two-dimensional Ising model in an annealed random field: Exact results

L.L. Gonçalves, Robin B. Stinchcombe

The effect of a discrete distribution of annealed random fields on the properties of the two-dimensional Ising model is studied. The random field is allowed to assume the values 0,\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}h with the probabilities ${p}_{0}$,${p}_{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$, and a parameter \ensuremath{\mu} is introduced which is determined by specifying ${p}_{0}$. Exact results are obtained by mapping the model onto an effective Ising model on the rectangular lattice without field, and the probabilities ${p}_{0}$,${p}_{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ are expressed in terms of the magnetization and two-spin correlations of the effective model. It is shown that the long-range order is not destroyed by the random field and the transition temperature increases as ${p}_{0}$ decreases. For a given ${p}_{0}$ the critical temperature increases with the field strength and these combined effects show that the annealed random field favors the ordering of the system, therefore presenting behavior opposite to that expected for the system in a quenched random field.

First-order phase transition in a 2D random-field Ising model with conflicting dynamics

Nuno Crokidakis

The effects of locally random magnetic fields are considered in a nonequilibrium Ising model defined on a square lattice with nearest-neighbor interactions. In order to generate the random magnetic fields, we have considered random variables { h } that change randomly with time according to a double-Gaussian probability distribution, which consists of two single-Gaussian distributions, centered at + h o and − h o , with the same width σ. This distribution is very general and can recover in appropriate limits the bimodal distribution ( ) and the single-Gaussian one ( h o = 0). We performed Monte Carlo simulations in lattices with linear sizes in the range L = 32–512. The system exhibits ferromagnetic and paramagnetic steady states. Our results suggest the occurrence of first-order phase transitions between the above-mentioned phases at low temperatures and large random-field intensities h o for some small values of the width σ. By means of finite size scaling, we estimate the critical exponents in the low-field region, where we have continuous phase transitions. In addition, we show a sketch of the phase diagram of the model for some values of σ.

Ising Model with Random Local Fields in a Two‐Dimensional Ferromagnet

J. Mielnicki, T. Balcerzak, G. Wiatrowski

Abstract A spin 1/2 Ising model with random fields is studied using a 3‐rd order Matsudaira approximation. The two‐dimensional ferromagnet with square lattice is considered only. The system is found to show a tricritical behaviour and the existence of two phase transitions, one of second order and another of first order, for certain values of the field strength. The behaviour of magnetization and spin‐correlation function between n.n. spins is discussed in detail.

Anisotropic Ising model in a magnetic field: Effective-field theory analysis

Minos A. Neto, Rosana A. dos Anjos, J. Ricardo de Sousa

The anisotropic two-dimensional Ising model in the presence of a magnetic field is studied within two different approaches: the effective-field theory (EFT) with correlation and the Bethe-Peierls (BP) approximation. The model consists of ferromagnetic interaction $({J}_{x})$ in the $x$ direction and antiferromagnetic interaction $({J}_{y})$ in the $y$ direction. The phase diagram in the $T\text{\ensuremath{-}}H$ plane is obtained for the particular case ${J}_{x}={J}_{y}$. Special focus is given in the low-temperature region of the phase diagram, where a first-order phase transition is observed using the mean-field approximation, which is in disagreement with the linear chain approximation (LCA). Our results indicate a second-order phase transition for all values of $H∕J∊[0,2]$, with the presence of a reentrant behavior only observed in the BP approximation in accordance with the results of the LCA and exact solution. The null field critical temperature is an increasing function of $r={J}_{y}∕{J}_{x}$, and in the $r\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$ limit we have found, using BP and EFT, the approximate form ${k}_{B}{T}_{N}∕{J}_{x}\ensuremath{\simeq}A∕\mathrm{ln}(1∕r)$ in accordance with the exact result of Onsager.

Mean-field phase diagram of the spin-1 Ising ferromagnet in a Gaussian random crystal field

C. E. I. Carneiro, Vera B. Henriques, Silvio R. A. Salinas

The authors consider the mean-field version of a spin-1 Ising ferromagnet in a random crystal field described by a Gaussian probability distribution. Depending on the width of the Gaussian, they obtain a rich phase diagram, with critical and coexistence lines and some multicritical points. At low temperatures, their numerical results are supported by some analytic asymptotic expansions. They also calculate the ground state for a suitable two-valued delta-function distribution to compare with the results for the Gaussian case.
