Which is the quantum decay law of relativistic particles?

S. A. Alavi, Carlo Giunti A

We discuss the relation between the quantum-mechanical survival probability of an unstable system in motion and that of the system at rest. The usual definition of the survival probability which takes into account only the time evolution of an unstable system leads to a relation between the survival probability of the system in motion and that of the system at rest which is different from the standard relation based on relativistic time dilation. This approach led other authors to claim non-standard quantum-mechanical effects which are in clear contradiction with Special Relativity. We show that an appropriate relativistic definition of the survival probability which takes into account also the space evolution of an unstable system leads to the standard relation between the survival probability of the system in motion and that of the system at rest, in agreement with Special Relativity. We present a rigorous derivation of this result based on a wave packet treatment.

Relativistic quantum mechanics and relativistic entanglement in the rest-frame instant form of dynamics

David Alba, Horace W. Crater, Luca Lusanna

A new formulation of relativistic quantum mechanics is proposed in the framework of the rest-frame instant form of dynamics, where the world-lines of the particles are parametrized in terms of the Fokker-Pryce center of inertia and of Wigner-covariant relative 3-coordinates inside the instantaneous Wigner 3-spaces, and where there is a decoupled (non-covariant and non-local) canonical relativistic center of mass. This approach: (a) allows us to make a consistent quantization in every inertial frame; (b) leads to a description of both bound and scattering states; (c) offers new insights on the relativistic localization problem; (d) leads to a non-relativistic limit with a Hamilton-Jacobi treatment of the Newton center of mass; (e) clarifies non-local aspects (spatial non-separability) of relativistic entanglement connected with Lorentz signature and not present in its non-relativistic treatment.

NEW NON-MARKOVIAN TREATMENT OF THE SPONTANEOUS DECAY OF AN UNSTABLE ATOMIC STATE IN RELATIVISTIC QED

JOSIP SEKE

It is shown that the application of a self-consistent projection-operator method, developed recently by the author, makes a complete treatment of the spontaneously decaying atomic state in relativistic QED possible. In a new physical real-transition interaction picture (in which the unobservable interaction of the free electron with the vacuum radiation field is eliminated) explicit finite analytic results for the non-Markovian time evolution and the radiative line shape in the case of relativistic Lyman-α spontaneous emission are obtained.
