Abstract

Threshold analysis for transverse instabilities in photorefractive counterpropagating two-wave mixing through reflection gratings is performed. A numerical algorithm for the treatment of wave equations in this geometry is developed, displaying the emergence of running transverse waves. They appear above a threshold in the applied electric field, and their transverse wave number and oscillation frequency agree well with the values predicted by stability analysis.

Mechanism of transverse instability of counterpropagation in photorefractive media

Boris I. Sturman, Alexander I. Chernykh

It is shown that counterpropagation of two light beams in a photorefractive medium can be unstable against spontaneous emission of light waves of the same frequency and polarization traveling at small angles. The mechanism of the instability is based on the buildup of a set of spatial reflection gratings. The threshold thickness and the corresponding emission angle are found. Results of the theory are applied to interpretation of existing experimental data.

Transverse instability threshold in counterpropagating light beams for a nonlinear medium with local photorefractive response

Boris I. Sturman, Alexander I. Chernykh

We derive the threshold conditions for the instability of counterpropagating waves in a nonlinear medium with local photorefractive response against the excitation of transverse small-angle structures. These conditions allow for all the important types of diffraction from refractive-index reflection gratings and are not limited to the case of strict frequency degeneracy of the waves. We study the dependence of the crystal-thickness threshold and the secondary wave emission angle on the crystal parameters and the pump conditions. We show that when the pump wave intensities differ considerably, excitation of standing light structures is replaced by excitation of traveling structures. Finally, we discuss the applications of the theory to experiments with the photorefractive crystals LiNbO 3 and LiTaO 3 .

Transverse effects in photorefractive two-wave mixing

Cai Xin, Jinsong Liu, Shenglie Wang +1 more

In a biased photorefractive crystal, the process of two one-dimensional waves mixing, i.e., the dynamical evolution of both pump beam and signal beam, is traced by numerically solving the coupled-wave equation. Direct simulations show that the propagation and stability of the two beams are completely determined by the system parameters, such as the external bias field, the intensity and the beam waist of the pump beam. By adjusting these parameters, one can control the state of two Gaussian waves mixing. The numerical results are helpful for performing a two-wave mixing experiment.

The temporal behavior of optical phase conjugation by single-grating anisotropic four-wave mixing in photorefractive crystals is studied. Numerical evidence for optical instabilities of the phase-conjugate wave amplitude is shown.

Anisotropic four-wave mixing in cubic photorefractive crystals

Aleksander Błȩdowski, Wieslaw Z. Krolikowski

The anisotropic four-wave mixing in the scheme recently proposed by S.I. Stepanov and M.P. Petrov (Opt. Commun. vol.53, p.64-8, 1985) is studied. The main feature of this interaction arrangement is that the same phase hologram (index grating) has opposite contrasts for orthogonally polarized, counterpropagating waves. The coupled nonlinear equations, in the case of transmission and reflection gratings, for the pi /2 photorefractive phase shift are exactly solved, and their properties are discussed in detail. The numerical evidence of the effects of bistability and self-oscillation is included.>

Theory of the photorefractive effect for multiple-quantum-well structures in perpendicular field ref lection grating geometry

Vladimir V. Shkunov, Mark V. Zolotarev

The theory of photorefractive grating formation in a semi-insulating GaAs/AlGaAs multiple-quantum-well structure (MQWS) with an electric field applied across the layers and for counterpropagating writing beams is presented. The gain and the response time demonstrate a resonant behavior with respect to variations in both the applied field and the light’s wavelength. For a semi-insulating MQWS such an interaction geometry could provide the highest two-wave mixing gain, as much as 104 cm−1, which exceeds the linear absorption.
